You are right about this being important, but it is just one of thousands of advancments being made in biotech! And do realize that this is far from "life from nothing". Even if they engineered a completely novel organism (here they just did some cut and pasting) it wouldn't be life from nothing. We have the advantage of a code that has been refined over the last few billion years.
