  1. Re:Elastic Clause on Driver's Licenses to Become National ID Cards · · Score: 1

it's my understanding that section 8 is pretty much done these days...it's all about the interstate commerce clause now, though the Rehnquist has been somewhat tough on it. but the basic idea is that congress can regulate commerce between states, which applies to interstate highways, and therefore drivers' licenses...it's a stretch, but i think a non-Rehnquist Supreme Court or even the current court under the post-9/11 conditions could approve this kind of thing.

For one thing, their audience is less likely to be familiar with statistical methods, and for another, I'm sure I've heard them report the results of "an online survey" as news, which gives it far more weight than it deserves.

yeah--this sort of thing seems to be happening all the time now, and it must be driving the Edward Tufte's of the world crazy. They report a news story with one expert saying "we should go after saddam hussein," and then take a poll as to whether we should go after him. what kind of answers do they think they'll get?

So are there any good news sites out there that do a good job of presenting both sides of any story, like a point/counterpoint thing? Because as I see it, a paper/site is either liberal or conservative, with few balanced. I love the New York Times, for instance, but it can be very slanted in the liberal direction. I also find the big 7 media conglomerates bias coverage all the time. It terrifies me that millions and millions of idiots get their news from AOl.com/CNN, and it terrifies me equally that millions get their news from MSN/MSNBC.

i think this kind of naming is a huge problem for Linux. I mean, to a first-time user, how the heck are they supposed to know what Gnome, KDE, X, Wine, etc. are? Linux needs good branding.

  5. Re:Interdev under Linux on Michael Robertson Interview about Lindows · · Score: 1

I'm addicted to Interdev, but not because of the drop-down things (although it is nice when you don't remember fieldnames). I just like how it doesn't mess with your code, it's completely customizable, and it makes previewing things in browsers easy. although i do wish it had a screen-ruler. I use that screen-ruler.exe thing, but it's annoying.

right now, i'm doing a project w/ cold-fusion, and the data environment sucks compared to interdev.

but here's a question: i've always been a little uncomfortable using RDS w/ either set-up. Are there security risks compared just using good old ssh? If so, what can i do to minimize?

I agree w/ niftynews on this one--i think people are innundated with monthly fees right now. Think about what people's monthly bills look like right now: Rent w/utilities: say $800 Phone: ~$25 +caller ID/voicemail: ~$40 total +long distance: say ~$55 total Cell: ~$40 or more Electricity: $50 Cable: $25 or more ---- That means people are already have almost $1000 of "nondiscretionary" spending per month. Throwing DSL at $50/month hurts most people, especially families who figure they can save $30 a month by suffering with a dial-up. Which equals $360 per year--with compounded interest it adds up quickly. What we need is good all-in-one packages that give you phone/cable/dsl/cell service on one monthly bill, for around $100. The telecom and cable systems have a lot of upgrading to do, but the fiber backbone is there. A lot of colleges are packaging things for students this way (minus cell phones). I think AT&T has started offering something like this, but after last falls snafus, I wouldn't touch AT&T with a ten-foot pole. The disadvantage, obviously, is vertical integration. But if all of the big evil conglomerates are competing with each other in this, we could be better off.
