No it was not patching the PSP still had a risk of bricking it, and the games are huge compared to the ones for the DS. The most pirate friendly console still is the DS.
But the issue is once you patched the PSP it became a killer handheld, the hardware behind really is excellent, but Sony had locked it down to such a degree in the beginning that it did not show. (Movies could not be played in full resolution, an online radio only was available after the homebrewers had one for almost a year, and PS1 games could be played if it was open instantly without having to go through sonys shop, I dont want to even speak about all the other emulation stuff, the Sony PSP was able to handle in full speed) You even gained a lot of comfort by being able to dump your bough games onto the ministick and play them with faster load times and less battery drain that way. (Still one huge advantage the normal hacked PSP has over the Go, because you still can resale the games and they are used cheaper)
The old sony has been dead for almost 20 years, I think the downfall came long before the memory stick and even the media buyout they did, the media division just enforced the shift which already was underway before. Remember the mini disk it came before sony bough the film division, it was dead on arrival due to sonys high pricing and the inability to have digital outs as well as their proprietary atrac codec. It could have replaced the aging floppy disks, but it did not. The 3.5 inch floppy disk was pretty much the last open standard they were able to get out of the door, since then it was vendor and user lockin. I think every company goes through this transition once they are successful enough, I think the deathnail for sony was the walkman after that they dropped the user friendlyness. And it shows, show me how much brand recognition Sony has nowadays, they only are known for overpriced junk which locks you in. Except for the playstation everyone tries to avoid Sony as much as possible outside of Japan. The status Sony once had now has been moved to Apple.
The does suck speeches happened in the past as well, it is a usual Microsoft tactic. Well we screwed up but the next *fill in whatever you want* will be better so please do not buy from our competition. That has been the standard speech every two years since 1982.
Many times it simply is not worth it to quit a job over a lousy project. I did 1-2 times myself, and I once refused a job offer because it was in the weapons industry. But many times it simply is not worth it, but I never stay calm, and start to make protocols so that the situation is clear who is to blame once the shit hits the fan internally. The thing is sometimes the impossible is wanted and you can say what you want to your boss, he does not want to listen, so keep protocols protocols protocols, and if a scapegoat has to be found you have to be in the clear on this one that you acted responsible by always telling the truth regarding it but you were ignored!
Well if you are mid 40 have a wife and a few kids, then I wonder if you still speak out and loose your job. Its easier to do that if you donÂt have anything to loose anymore than if people you dearly love depend on you for their survival. That is one of the reasons btw. why usually revolutions erupt over bad economy and hunger, than over a political system, as long as the majority has something to loose they stay calm even if things are not perfect.
Actually you have to rethink the entire mentality. Japan still has a lot of feudalistic mentality left, and that resembles in the companies behavioral structures. Japanese companies love to lock down their customers that way. Sony is one example, Nintendo the other.
I assume the PSP Go was born out of that mentality actually the entire Sony mentality is like that, they only open up whenever they gut smacked hard on the head.
Not sure why Apple also behaves like that I assume this is jobs doing who loves to be a king and his customers are his minions!
I cannot really talk about the internals, but from the outside I agree, just look at the absymal track record in virtual console regarding LCD screens. Old games often do not work due to their display modes. The solution simply would be add scalers to the dreaded things. Well guess what Nintendo fixed some games by simply shifting the display mode around others they never fixed. So half of the virtual console games I bought cannot be played on a newer tv the other half can be enabled with an undocumented key combination on the wiimote. This was the main reason why I hacked the wii open, I finally can play Sonic which I bought because the homebrew emulator can scale!
Who cares if you want to get many women, just get one, and be happy with her. (I have found one, and now have a happy baby) And no I have been in the field since the 80s on and off (started as a highschool internship to have my first professional it experience) and I cannot remember anything glorylike, except for some press stupidity in the late 90s.
The machines however were more interesting back then, more variety and the pcs were the absolute bottom of the barrel technologywise.
Keep on dreaming, Microsoft probably will announce the next generation xbox next year and I am not sure what Sony is up to. The plan probably for both of them is to retire the current gen in a PS2 sort of way, as cheap alternative to the new system. You can expecte the next console generation around 2012.
The issue is that the PC tech has advanced to such a degree that within a 3 years timeframe a new console gen running on cheap hardware outpacing the current one by miles becomes viable again.
The saturn had other problems, Sega did pretty much everything they could to destroy the platform and when the PS1 came the hardware was subpar. The Dreamcast was destroyed because the PS2 could play DVDs!
Actually the dirty secret of the playstation was that it was so easy to pirate while nintendo was so overprotective about the N64 that most people jumped onto the ps1 bandwagon because they could get pirated copies of the game. Once the critical mass was reached the normal buyers started to buy it who usually dont care about pirated copies and then it became a self runner, while Nintendo went down in flames because no one really could pirate the N64 cartrigdes.
The comparison is a little unwarranted... Xbox's failure rate was around 16.5%~33%. Having systems fail isn't a problem.... infact.5% is nicely below the industry standards. It is when you can get 5broken ones in a row that it becomes a problem...
Wasnt the failure rate of early xbox models around 90-100%?
Simply do not use the kindle, other ebook readers are more public domain friendly, especially since you can get epubs from google and project gutenberg.
Actually I had a look at symphony when the beta came out it was quite ok. It was more or less a bugfixed openoffice embedded in an Eclipse frame for easy access (very similar of what you get if you add the OpenOffice plugins to eclipse but tighter integrated).
Not too bad, ahead of OpenOffice 3.0 bugfixwise, but not really graphically fancy like the ribbon interface.
You forgot that back in those days broadband connections were not that previvalent and CD burners also not everyones cup. So piracy was not a big issue on the DC while it was to some degree but it definitely did not lead to the downfall.
Well if the games are designed that way then it probably is forgivable, but camera control is really needed especially for third person games. I would not want to play any tombraider without it anymore.
As for the PS1, the dual shock controller was so important that it was the first after launch equipment ever which became controller standard on an already launched console, so go figure how important the second analog stick really is.
The D-pad is absolutely subpar for camera control, sometimes a digital input makes sense especially if you need fast reaction times, but for camera control analog control is an absolute must to get precise positioning.
seriously, why would anyone need a second analog stick?
Two words, camera control. 3d camera positioning still is an issue and back then even more was than it is today, getting the freedom of having a free floating camera attached to the second stick is a big helper. I would not want to live without it anymore. It was so important that the controller with the second stick became a standard on the sony platforms despite being introduced after the initial launch of the console (I think it was the PS1)

I once refused a job offer because it was in the weapons industry.
Let me be the first to say that you are a complete and utter pussy. Turn in your man card right now for being scared of hurting someone.
Yes and I am proud of it, because I value life more than money.

Do we expect anything other than a locked-down proprietary anti-consumer mess out of Sony?
Yeah! Apple wouldn't do anything like that! Let's all buy iPhones!
Yeah apple is all about choice... ahem what did I say?
Well it was smelling already strangely before the PSP Go came out.
I assume the PSP Go is DOA!
Besides that we are talking about Nintendo here, they are currently learning what this internet thing is ...

That means about 99% of all games are not well designed in the first place ;-)
Seriously i hate games where the camera control has locking mechanisms.
