Well, now that you know that the federal government has email storage issues, perhaps your company needs to step up and learn about how to bid on federal contracts. State governments are in smaller versions of the same boat. Our governor may not be turning over 100 million emails to our State Archives, but it will be a bunch. Even the last geezer governor transferred a big chunk.

In North Carolina, "permanent" is exactly what it says. There's a short list of items that are supposed to be permanent (NCGS 115C-402), but many districts keep more than that.
I could easily agree that preserving and disseminating the works of Shakespeare is more important than the latest comedy album from Adam Sandler. But that's my opinion.;)

Actually, there is a current attempt to do just this. Apple has recently started KidSafe (tm, probably), which is a list of sites that have been reviewed and approved by a group of teacher/librarian types.
Since I'm on my PC at work, I can't find out much about it, and I won't go into the remaining issues, such as "who are those teachers?"
One of the oldest networks to use the name "freenet" was the Cleveland Freenet, run through Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The software developed for it was licensed to other localities. Unfortunately, its day has come and gone.
You might suggest looking at cooking as an entree. There are plenty of books like What Einstein Told His Cook or Cookwise that apply science to the every day. Watching Alton Brown's Good Eats probably won't bother them much.
