LimeWire has taken an interesting approach to this. They had been getting a lot of donations through Amazon.
Now they are providing a professional version for $6 which just takes out banner ads and opt-out spyware with 6 months worth of free updates. The code is open source but it is a lot easier to just use the installers. www.limewire.com
