With AMD's past history with overheating under heavy use (read overclocking), wouldn't this hyperthreading just compund the issue by tricking the OS into overworking the CPUs?

Since I am one of the "thugs" that is now gaurding our nations airports, I'll take that comment as "Sir, I would like to thank you for giving up your normal job in order to serve your country and protect my sorry ass." We are all trained on how to deal with emotional situations and how to diffuse them. We are also trained on how to deal with disrespecting foreigners.
In this case, it may be that the author of the article used the word backups instead of redundant systems. That seems far more likely.
