  1. Re:Something smells... on Netcraft Web Server Stats Challenged · · Score: 1

"The site disney.com is running Netscape-Enterprise/3.6 SP3 on Solaris."

    According to netcraft^^^

    ~$ HEAD www.disney.com/| grep Server
    Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0

    My results this time^^^

    *shrug*...go figure

  2. Something smells... on Netcraft Web Server Stats Challenged · · Score: 5, Interesting

I tried several sites myself with my own javascript and guess what?

My results were were different than their's more than half the time! I figured they had multiple servers running, etc., so I rechecked at least 5 times on all sites (all sites checked, that is ~50)...NO CHANGE!

Take disney.com, for example. Their site says IIS 5.0. I got netscape...so did netcraft.

    One word... BULL#%&*!

...because I can see both sides of the problem here. I can see how his public comments can be seen as partiality. I can see how the "court" is supposed to weigh ALL of the facts before coming to a conclusion... ...but, I _REALLY_ dislike Microsoft. Not because their products suck (that's fodder for another discussion). Not because they are a monopoly. Because they have _ZERO_ scruples. As far as I am concerned, the Judge is right on in his analogies of M$. Quite honestly, one of the biggest reasons I use Linux as my primary OS is because it isn't made by "the beast".

So I'm torn because I see both sides. I think he was out of line, but I think he was absolutely correct.

    >>I don't need all that processor power.

Neither do I. My year and a half old processor (Athlon 1.1 Ghz) still runs new games (read Unreal Tournament 2003 demo) at 1600x1200 at acceptable fps -- granted I have a Geforce 4 ti4400.

    >>The economy is a huge driver in this, and if they don't see that, they are silly.

Good point. You wonder if they are falling into the same trap the recording industry has fallen into in overlooking the obvious.

Don't get me wrong, I want the fastest processor possible (if I can get it for free), but right now I just can't find anything I do that DEMANDS that I have 2+ Ghz power.

I was going to suggest Opera, but the fact that you specified Open Source cuts it out of the picture. If you are embedding it for commercial use, Konqueror is probably your best bet as far as licensing. Having worked at an embedded linux company that went with Opera, despite it's proprietary nature, I'm quite biased to it (it's what I use everywhere, everyday, so when I get the funds for a Zaurus, I'll be right at home).

    Anyway, Konqueror is next IMHO.

  12. Wireless will scale...if done right on Cringely's Bank Shot · · Score: 4, Interesting

I work for a company that will be hosting an access point for an isp. In return we get a reduced rate on the bandwidth that we purchased (DS3). I live not too far from work/the access point and will be given free service (not relevant, but cool anyway :)).

The reason this company's solution just might work is this: They are installing multiple access points at businesses in my area. Each tranceiver (yes, everyone's antennae both receives and transmits the network signal, widening the effective range) that is brought online is assigned to a specific access point. As bandwidth starts to saturate a given access point, a new access point is to be brought online by splitting the cost with a business that will play host. That just may be what is needed to make wireless work, instead of becoming a choked alternative to 56k.

Just maybe it will make high bandwidth available to the poor saps (myself included) that can't get dsl or cable.

  14. Look on the right side on Yahoo News Posts Advertisements as News · · Score: 1

The article itself is not contaminated (or I'm simply lucky enough to have missed yet another x-10 pop-up). On the right side of the article, under the "advertisement" section, is a list of links that look like they go to stories. When you click...well, you get the picture. Frankly, I'm not really that worried, since it is labeled advertisement, albeit in small type, and the "stories" are pretty obviously advertisements. Marketing guys seem to all talk alike...:) -Pride
