in my experience many companies don't like to get "free" software, since they

1. don't understand how to value/account for it
2. and/or
3. want to know the developer is going to be around in a few years when they need a refresh

hopefully you'll find that sun is responding to these two, rather than some evil plot.

this SPARCstation LX on Ebay should run solaris 9 so long as you put in sufficient disk and RAM. not bad for $75.

just remember that the newer the sun workstation, the better chance you have of using PC-type components to upgrade it.
