I know it's not a popular view, expect for /. :). BUT M$ broke the law ! Flamers tell me I'm wrong. Hmmm, I thought it was quiet out there. So, they broke the law, not a rule, not a guideline, but the crimial law of the US of A. No problems so far. So, the convicted party now wants to says that it wasn't an IMPORTANT law. Just one of those nusicences that comapanies have to deal with. So, we really didn't do anything bad, so why not just says uncle. Anyone sense an issue with this ? You broke the law, not a rule, not a guideline, the law, the thing that Congress & those other august individuals think should be the way the US of A operates. Still no flames I hope so far ? So, a convicted CRIMINAL is now arguing about how they should be sentanced ? Hands up those of you who think that if we replaced M$ with 'black drug dealer' that the sentance would be 15 to life ? I'm Scottish so i'm sorry if I'm missing something, but in Scotland if you break the law you DON'T get to arguee what your sentance will be, if the judge advocate says nine months, don't expect to see home for nine months. Why does M$ get to decide on the punisment that is laid upon it ? Rapist, muggers, murders, peodo's DON'T get to chinwag with the judge about whats 'right' as a punisment for a crime. The judge TELLS them what the punishment is. Why isn't this the case in the US ? Or didn't M$ break the law like the Supreme Court said ? Or does the 'Supreme' court really mean the 'Pointless waste of time' court ? Just a thought. BTW perhaps 1776 was a bad idea afterall

I've been reading these comments & laughing. Back in 1989 myself & a bunch of naive developers spent LOTS of time & inbibed a LARGE amount of herbal stimulants whilst trying to crystalize our ideas on what to include in a 'killer' app. We we're too dumb to realise the limitations of technology circa 1989, hmm .025 mips nice ! BUT the basic idea that GDC discussed were the SAME as the ideas we thought of back in '89. These ideas are not new. I've got a book on my shelf from 1990ish about how to produce computer based wargames, written by the head cheese at SSI at the time. He mentioned a TEXT based online simulation he'd help create that simulated the 100 years war, (Punch-up between the English & the French between 1300 & 1400ish). The basic system was unreal, they modeled the details for 1500+ noble families across both France & England. Estate management was CORRECTLY modelled. Players could opt to become member of the clergy & aim for advancment to Archbishop or Cardinal . They could be a simple knight who hoped to build a power base through battle or allicance. But the BEST bit was that the English king was 'voted' for by the English players, whilst the French king was randomly chosen. The point being that the real French monarchy of the period, was as nutty as as a shithouse rat. So, you could end up with the English king 'played' by a 45 year old accountant, whilst the French king was a 13 year old schoolkid ! The whole universe was completely open, a humble knight could become the Marshal of France through courage & skill, likewise a humble cleric could become Archbishop of Canterbury ! My point is if we could create this sort of vision 10+ years ago with VT100 terms & PDP's & 16Mhz processors, why the fsck can't we have something similar now but with kick-arse 3d graphics ? FYI the book is .... 'The Complete Wargame Handbook - How to Play, Design & Find Them' - James F. Dunnigan ISBN 0-688-10368-5 Answers on a postcard to ... aross@compsoft.co.uk

Mr. Mundie has a rather nsaty job at the moment, his employeer is a convicted criminal currently arguing about how long they're going down for. PLUS they're being sued for mucho bucks by Sun, BeOs, plus any body with a long standing grouse against M$ for 'not playing nice'. PLUS M$ hopes for the server market have disappeared as potential customers realise that they can have cheap, reliabe server products that DON'T them to offer M$ their first-born child to use. Mr. Real-World says that M$ is about to suffer a swift kick up the arse as regards they're business practices. They have a major problem, regardless of the Linux crazies out there IBM, AOL(!), show that OSS is the way to go. The basic problem is that M$ can't compete with FREE software, so what, realistically can they do ? Answers on a postcard ....

I've worked for 3! companies that went titsup ! The basic rule you has to remember is that management WILL NOT tell you that there is a problem financially with the company, even if you think they are your 'friends'. It doesn't work that way. After three times you begin to know the signs(!). 1) Can't pay you this month, minor cash flow hiccup - leave immediately ! 2) Your customers phone to express sorrow that the head developer was involved in a major RTA - Leave immediately. Put it this way, BIG mortgage, 3+ kids, wife not working, what would you do ? 3) Your R&D boss is replaced with a U.S. bullshit merchant who quotes 'allegators in the swamp' stories - Leave immediately. Basically if you think your about to get butt-plugged by your firm. Your right ! Leave immediatley.
