  1. 1st Season TNG = TOS with new characters on Salon Writes on The Troubles with "Trek" · · Score: 1
TNG was uneven, and those who refuse to admit that should be made to watch the "planet of somewhat clad bodybuilders" episode from the first season until they cry "uncle".

Hmmm... I wonder if that is the episode where they visit what I refer to as "the planet of scantily clad happy people who have sex all the time". If it is, one viewing was enough to make me scream "uncle". Yes, the first season was truly awful. (Well at least the episodes I've seen anyway. I'm sure there's a few decent ones in there.) It was just as campy as TOS. You could bet your paycheck that if there was a half way decent looking female on any planet they visited that Riker would end up locking lips with her just like Kirk used to. Ugh. The second season was better but I think TNG really hit its stride in the 3rd season.

  2. Where are the business machines? on AMD takes a big hit & IDT exits x86 clone biz · · Score: 1

I am in a position to choose what computers we will buy at work and I would love to buy some boxes with AMD chips. Unfortunately all the amd machines I see are "home/game" computers. I need machines from a reputable dealer that are certified for/bundled with Win NT, MS Office SBE/Pro, etc. Until then I'm stuck with Intel by default.

If Linux were sold by Microsoft, would you be using it?

No, I wouldn't. But I have no doubt that many other people would.

After all, look at all the people who believed Microsoft's sincerity when they started to support Java. Of course, once they had gained significant browser market share they dropped any plans to include support for future versions of Java and turned their Java compiler into a Windows development tool.

I would expect to see a similar embrace and extend (and neutralize) strategy if they ever put out their own distribution of Linux. And I don't think that such an idea is out of the realm of possibility. If Linux was seriously threatening their market share I believe they would. Right now its on their radar scope and their keeping an eye on it, but its not to the point that they would take drastic measures to stop it. (When they adopted Java, they were at such a point. Netscape ruled the Internet and their browser share was practically zilch.)

If they ever do put out a Linux distribution, expect to see all the former Linux scoffers start to sing its praises. Watch the press write about how Microsoft has gotten the Open Source religion. Then be disgusted as millions of gullible lemmings embrace Linux done the Microsoft way just like they're embracing Microsoft's Internet strategy.

Don't try that one on all the thousands of people who bought clones in the 80's and early 90's. They bought PCs because it didn't say IBM on the box.

He's not talking about the late 80's/early 90's. Nobody would have bought those clones if IBM hadn't created the PC platform and Microsoft wouldn't be the most influential software maker in the world if IBM hadn't chosen their OS. The PC platform became popular because of IBM, regardless of how many people came to loathe them later on.

That's a shame because they are a very different company than they used to be. They have a very different attitude now that they have been humbled by the clone makers and Microsoft on the PC front. They are one of the biggest supporters of open standards and they are even willing to promote competitors technology if it (I'm thinking specifically of Java which was created by one of their biggest competitors in the Unix market). No, they are not perfect, but no company is. I would much rather buy a PC from them than from Dell, which is a Wintel patsy in my mind.

I agree that those are reasons that the post could have been downgraded (Especially the profanity) but after a month of reading Slashdot I'm skeptical. Maybe its the comments I see on them. Instead of Redundant or Offtopic I often see comments like Troll or Flamebait when the most offensive comment in the message is some lame comment like "Microsoft Rules!" etc... I don't think any poster that enthusiastically supports Microsoft or puts down Linux should automatically be marked a Troll. I see plenty of comments referring to Windows NT as a buggy piece of junk (often using more colorful language) that aren't graded the same way. Messages with a politically correct viewpoint seem less likely to be moderated in the negative direction or with negative comments.

Because SlashDot is dominated by pro-Linux, pro-open source, anti-Microsoft types. There's nothing wrong with that, but instead of responding with a post, many seem to like to use moderation to comment on views they don't like.

Messages that have comments that promote a Microsoft product or suggest that Linux is less than perfect are regularly downgraded and marked as Troll or Flamebait (whether those labels are deserved or not).
