The only problem I've seen with the 2.4 kernel (this seems to happen only on 2.4.7) is that it won't recognize some IDE cdrom drives as valid block devices. It's nothing that a little 'insmod cdrom' or 'modprobe ide-cdrom' won't fix, but it was a major oversite.
On the plus side, it's amazing how flawlessly 2.4 handles USB toys. Overall, I'd take 2.4 ove the past kernels any day.
