  1. Re:Store the Library of Congress on a PC Card. on New Optical Disk That Holds 140GB · · Score: 1

In my line of work (marine seismic surveys) a decent sized survey will be about 100GB - the intermediate processing steps will be a multiple of that. Given that acquisition technology steadily improving, the initial amount of data is only going to go up. So rather than hand a client a treuckload of 3590 tapes, we'll be able to slip them a credit card, with all the intermediate processing history and data as well. I like it. If the access speeds are up to snuff, then we'll be able to get rid of all those huge arrays of disks that we have in the machine room. This just looks better the more I look at it.

According to the tax seminar I went to the other week (being a new entry into the US & all that) even Swiss accounts will hand the details over. The only country not doing it is Luxembourg. Oh, BTW, dont complain about your taxes - they're a lot lower than in Australia. Just complain about the way they're spent.

Who says that they have to be people? Why not write yourself something that pounds the site a few times and picks the best price? That's what computers are good for, ya know. Hey, if you're feeling really evil, you could (with the co-operation of a few friends) manipulat the prices anyway you liked.

I'm using a Voodoo3 under the DRI support in FreeBSD. It works OK - q3a, quakeforge and quake2 work. I've tried SOF, but it's rather slow, and Descent3, which really needs joystick support of a decent level. I've been meaning to finish the port of the Linux joystick driver to FreeBSD for sometime. This ought to get me off my rear.

Part of legal doctrine is that only the facts that are immediately relevant to a case should be presented. Any law court anywhere that is based on the Westminster system of justice will try and exclude eveidence about a criminal's previous convictions, regardless of the gyrations of lawyers on TV.

Many years ago, when I was reading everything and anything that was science fiction, a friend lent this to me as a joke. It has the spectacular awfulness of a Harold Robbins novel, without that man's storytelling ability. I plowed my way through the series, enjoying the unintentional humour and reciting passages to friends with a malicious glee. This was one bad book, rivalling even some of the worst slash'n'screw swords & sorcery fantasy novels, which is saying something.

    Urrk.

Dude, I was one of the first people to buy Quake 3 for Linux in Australia - tin box & all. That was late last year. Just came back from 2 months in the US to discover some junkie had broken in & stolen it & Quake 2 - plus some home theatre gear, DVDs & CDs. Will have to buy it again.

The Hitachi DVP-250 is region free. I bought one whilst in the UK and have had success with both region 2 & region 5 disks. Mind you, it was rather expensive, but has S-Video out, digital out (for DTS) zoom & a whole raft of other features.

They've got a point - particularly the part about 35+ yr. old programmers being squeezed out. I've been lucky enough to catch the wave just as Unix started to grow, and now with Linux rearing up like a tsumani, things are looking even better. You do have to hunt down the challenging work, employers look askance at those old people wanting to do grunt stuff that any bright kid can do. I'm working in Australia, where the situation is somewhat different. I believe (judging from the Jobserve ads I see) that the UK has some well paid work too.

I got in contact with the office of the Shadow Minister of Communications (Stephen Smith, my local Federal member) and the Labour party intends to revoke this legistlation if it's voted in at the next election. They did try to amend it with a "sunset" clause, so that it would expire in 3 years, but that was unsuccessful.
