  1. Re:What else are we supposed to do? on More On Detecting NAT Gateways · · Score: 1

It's not like putting 2 computers on a 1.5 Mbit connection makes it 3Mbit of throughput.

No, it's not. But here in Australia at least, the basic unit for measuring usage is the byte, not the bit/second. While theoretically, you would still only be able to download a certain amount of data in a month if you maxxed out your connection, the fact is that two computers are likely to download more that one (double the windows-update or apt-get-upgrade or whatever).

  2. I remember reading... on Parallel Universes Are Real · · Score: 1

once about a theory that these universes weren't actually distant in three dimensions as the articles suggests. The theory was that in 3 dimensions, these universes were in precisely the same places as the one we're in - they differed only in other dimensions (based on the theory that we experience 4 dimensions - X, Y, Z and time - but that there are many others that we cannot experience yet, and "travelling" in these dimensions would reveal these other universes).

Another theory speculated that, at any instant in time, an infinite number of parallel universes were simultaneously created, and began tangenting off in their own timelines - these corresponded to the infinite number of possible actions that could occur in each instant. The very next instant, each of these would experience a similar spawning of universes and tangents of possibilities.

  3. Re:Install Linux! on What Would You Put Into A Software Survival Kit? · · Score: 1

I'd be inclined to disagree with the statement that "keeping your system secure is easy".

It is, if you know what you're doing, and if business logic and rules allow you to update/upgrade your box. For example, if you're running a website with some large file downloads (as I do), you have to consider the effect of disconnecting hundreds of users mid-download just to patch to the latest release of the software.

Also, so-called "average" users aren't always going to know, or care, what a security bulletin is, let alone how to go about getting and installing the patches. On the other hand, certain large proprietary vendors make it easy and painless to point-and-click your way to a more secure (note: not totally secure) system.

I'm not dissing Linux, or condoning MS here, just making the point that even though the patches and updates are released frequently and rapidly, doesn't mean you're able to follow through under all circumstances.

  4. Here's a thought... on Consumer Friendly (or Disney Hostile) DVD Players? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Personally, I follow the following simple steps. 1. Insert DVD into player. Press "PLAY" if disc does not start automatically. 2. Go for a walk. Fetch drink and nibbles from kitchen. Close any windows/curtains to create the correct atmosphere. 3. Retrun to living room. 4. Press "MENU" button, then select "Play Movie". Voila - problem solved. Ad/Warning has been missed, and movie is ready to play. And you've probably got some much needed exercise in the process.
