I have had no success applying any upgrades to Mandrake completely over an FTP connection. FreeBSD doesn't install nearly so much software in a default installation, but the default features are useful rather than bloatware.

Unlike certain Linux distributions, the FreeBSD package system seems to work great, even on packages that are on an FTP site somewhere else.
