  1. Don't forget the IIC+ on Apple's First Flops · · Score: 1

Don't forget the IIC+, the poorly conceived last member of the Apple II line. In hindsight, I think that Apple should have given up on the Apple II line before the IIGS and focused on producing a low cost Mac.

There were a lot of great things about the IIGS, but it always seemed to lack the support that the early macs had.

  2. Nothing New on Yahoo News Posts Advertisements as News · · Score: 1

This is nothing new! People have been creating ad graphics that try to masquerade as a legitimate part of a web page for a long time. Whether it be an ad that looks like a windows dialog box, or an ad that looks like news headlines, as budgets get tighter, companies like yahoo have become more cavilier. They are intruding further into the "user-experience" with their advertising.

As if these and the pop-under ads weren't bad enough, there are the "interstitial ads" that Yahoo's been employing for the last month or so on yahoogroups. You can encounter one of these in the wild when browsing the messages section of one of their groups. More times than not, when you click on a message subject to view the message, you'll be sent to a page that has a huge ad in the main content portion of the page. You're forced to look at the ad to find a small text link that will take you through to the actual message. I feel bad for those users that aren't on high bandwidth connection that have to wait for the huge graphic to download. Pure nastiness. Time to fire up the good-ol ad proxy.

I'm a fan of intricate hobbies myself. One book that's on my wishlist is Polyhedron Models by Magnus J. Wenninger. It contains instructions for making all sorts of incredibly cool models of complex polyhedra

  4. Dumb Question? (Application Servers vs Everything) on Ask Slashdot: Which Java Applications Server? · · Score: 1

So, is the term Application Server just some sort of marketing slang?

I've gone from developing CGI in a variety of languages to Java Servlets, both with tight integration to a DBMS, and including such features as load banancing, connection pooling...etc...etc. Since I stay mostly with Open Source software, I haven't come across the term 'Application Server' very often. What does the combination of existing technologies lack that an Application Server provides?

Is it somewhat analagous to building a linux based workgroup server from an old PC, or going out to buy a Cobalt Qube (or similar product) in that to obtain a particular functionality, one you have to put together yourself from surplus parts and free software, and the other is a turnkey solution?
