  1. You can say a lot about Forrester... on Linux Distributions Respond to Forrester · · Score: 1

but this isn't MS commisioned. The group Koetzle works in meets and plans research topics by what they think will be the biggest things on IT directors minds. FORR used to pride themselves on not doing commisioned research (this may have changed in the last couple of years, but AFAIK it hasn't). If anything the biggest flaw is in the research. For the most part it's 50 companies that they can get on the phone. Some of the analysts have never worked in the fields they cover, they just learn by reading about it and talking w/vendors. One might write about the future shakeout of programming languages, but never even compiled "hello world". The product suffers w/out the experience and underlying knowledge of the topic.

  2. Good riddance on Goodbye, Number Nine · · Score: 1

Hey, to tell you the truth I used to have utmost respect for them but they failed to move with the market. They were producing graphics cards (Imagine 128 series 2) for $500-$600 when a Matrox Millenium at the time could have been purchased for around half of that -- with comparable performance, if not better in some cases. Maybe I'm a bit jaded because I slapped down the extra $$ for one only to recieve a complete lack of driver support later on down the road. (I beleive it was a lack of NT4 support, but I really don't recall). I grew up right near the company and I was always cheering for the local guys, but it became harder and harder as it was becoming a clearly understaffed (ala multiple driver promises, but very few executions)and just a general death spiral... There were some talented folks there that I'm sure can contribute to the industry in other places...

  3. Rest in ......??? on DIVX is dead · · Score: 1

thank god this has died...anyone who has done any reading on this matter would realize that DIVX was not only a wide open door to the violation of your privacy, but also a means to extract more and more money from you in the future was you were hooked on it. Most commonly known as the foot in the door technique. DIVX also allowed them to control your viewing habits...say a movie was being re-released in theaters and you wanted to watch the disc you had already paid for...the ability was there for them to block your viewing... this is only the beginning of the laundry list of problems... (we could go on to mention the lack of features as compared to a DVD)

I can't even say I hope it rests in peace, cuz it doesn't deserve that much comfort...I think purgatory is a much better place for it...
