it's not so difficult when you're buying for a geek - it's much more tricky if you're the geek buying something. for instance, i'm a total techie, but my b/f is not. this makes gift buying unfairly easy for him (one of: games, toys, o'reilly books, philosophy books), while i have to really stretch my imagination to come up with something. and no, it turns out he doesn't like QAF all that much...:)

or you could go to the other extreme, and just agree with your s/o that the v-day is a completely ridiculous, artificial holiday, and you're going to boycott it. that's what we ended up doing...:)
