The answer from IETF is a workgroup called SIMPLE.
This working group focuses on the application of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP, RFC 2543) to the suite of services collectively known as instant messaging and presence (IMP). The IETF has committed to producing an interoperable standard for these services compatible with the requirements detailed in RFC 2779 and in the Common Presence and Instant Messaging (CPIM) specification, developed within the IMPP working group. As the most common services for which SIP is used share quite a bit in common with IMP, the adaptation of SIP to IMP seems a natural choice given the widespread support for (and relative maturity of) the SIP standard.

How can you be so selfish?
We are talking about OUR planet and you're talking about YOUR economy. Don't you know that there is also people outside of the US? I've been once in the US and I can tell you, you are wasting a lot of energy. Your statement about the cost of Kyoto treaty compared to the drinkable water problem suprised me, and maybe you are right. But I remember you that the US refuse to sign it, so now, tell me what do you think will come first in Afghanistan? Water or Petrol pipeline?
Don't trust too much google, I have seen some really disturbing results on it. I have tried once "al gore resume" and then "george w bush resume", there is a huge difference between the two (at least when you contact google from france) and I can't believe it is just a coincidence. Google is usually great for most of the searches, but what will happen if everybody use only google and if "a power" start to make them change their answers to you requests? Be careful, when everything will be online, this kind of manipulation will be close to rewriting the past.

Yes, I really wonder how they will deal with the rest of the world.
For me they have only two choices:
- Not selling any digital product outside of the US anymore.
- Setting a huge "chinese-like" firewall filtering the traffic from the outside.
I think the NSA is ready for the second one ...
