The way people would most commonly be caught, especially in the case of fling because of the encryption, would be to simply request something illegal, retrieve it, and then bust the admin of the machine that sent you the packets That would be the same as busting the companies that run routers over which you received the data, and thats obviously unworkable, here in the UK HMG are really screwing things up with the RIP bill which is almost as stupid, see Stand
There are also affects that don't work well on anything other than a large screen that engulfs your feild of vision, take the lobby scene in The Matrix with all the peices of marble flying off the pillars, everyone I have spoken to about that thought it had an oddly beautiful fractal like quality, which doesn't come out when watching on a small screen. Of course if we all had HMDs that reproduced that level of immersion then it would work, but I'm still waiting for one with a descent resolution. OTOH some of these films are very low budget and would never make it to the theatre and some are quite good check this Matrix spoof called Computer Boy - http://www.ifilm.com/films.taf?film_id= 115368

The nature of data, or information I will attempt to describe from my POV -
Localisation of the probability of a particular state within a dimension or dimensions.
The "meaning" of things to us homo sapiens is just the localising of probability within billions of neurons. However I do not yet know any way of describing the localisation in a way that is helpful in analysing such systems so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think many of us recall MS submitting ActiveX / COM to the standards bodies, fscking around for years and then withdrawing it, its just an MS BS / PR tactic, they have ZERO intention of making COM or C# or anything else a standard with control outside of MS, but as we have seen them pull this shit before we know its worthless, sorry MS we're wise to you, now go tell Bill we aren't stupid and we'd really like MS to stick with open industry standards, if you don't you'l just continue to lose ground to your competitors.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but CORBA was the first major component archetecture, ActiveX was supposed to be components for the Web, but it was Windows only (I think somone did attempt porting to some Unix flavours but AFAIR it all fell through), Java Beans is Java components, Enterprise Beans interoperate with CORBA via IIOP IIRC, now theres SOAP coming along which should be simpler than CORBA and cross platform, the search for the Holy Grail continues...
I agree, the point is, its rare, if it were structured more like class action suits, then you'd find lawyers jumping all over false patent claims as they could make good money from it, now I'm not a huge fan of lawyers, but if a tiny fraction of all the money that comes from the income patents generate ends up in the lawyers hands and we end up with a balanced and fair IPR system I for one would go along with it.
Again it comes down to a company misappropriating other peoples IP just as with the BT patent case recently. If we want to stop these situations from arising the easiest solution would be to make companies and individuals financially liable for misappropriation of IP, that way if they try to patent something that is obviously nullified due to prior art a bunch of lawyers will decend on them like vultures and pick them clean, this would restore a rights-responsibilities balance in the IP system.

Well if Hemos was really on the ball he would have got the Bridesmaids email addresses @hemosbridesmaids.org (-asm Ed) and a web page each for vital stats, IQ, fav OS etc, oh and the church walkthrough would have been better in VRML, you know open standards and all that. Anyway good luck Hemos, it renews my hope that there maybe someone out there for all of us (goldiggers, harlets and rif-raf need not apply).
OTOH does she really want thousands of nekkid fake pics floating around the Net? And I'm not even going to discuss what happens when GIMP gets tools for petrification and HotGritification...

The ordinary man in the street might be forgiven for thinking that BT is in the business of telecommunications, however due to a lack of investment on our part, and other companies doing it so much better than us, we at BT have decided to diversify and leverage our Intellectual Property, these assets include but are not limited to, air(TM), earth(TM), wind(TM) and fire(TM) and the Fifth Element(TM) should it ever be discovered (note: we are suing all those involved in the film of the same name for trademark infringement at this time). As BT has the ability to get away with being above the law, due in part to the wonderful politicians that take bribes, like Tony Blair and Patricia Hewitt we feel confident of completely destroying any hope that the UK has of being a force in the New Economy (we have that TMed and patented too), then we can take our country back to the Middle Ages, where our glorious leader, Sir nay King Bonfield will rule for eternity. BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!
Agreed, I didn't really know much about her before except for the whole Kurt Cobain thing, but she really gets what is happening, most pop / movie stars are quite vacuous, but Courtney is a sharp cookie, wow, I think I'm in love:)
What is The Matrix... Control... its a marketroid generated dream world to keep you under control, to turn a human being into this *holds up flashy PowerPoint presentation of demographics in one hand and billboard in the other*
Many a true word said in jest, since 1969 (BTW does anyone remember the phenomenon of putting "since XXXX" on everything, I think that was early 90s?)
Power is not a means. It is an end AH HA! This is the eternal mistake, we humans equate control with power, its an easy mistake to make. Let me explain, all these people are looking to control a market, to impose their own single imprint. Lets say they succeed, imagine if you will, evolution without random mutation, well its not evolution, its stasis, stagnation, and that is not powerful. Power is the balancing of the creation of structure, mental or psychical with the ability to change, mutate, be imaginative, this is a lesson that we all have to learn if we are to grow beyond an infantile society where all that counts is the acquisition of money.
So how do we educate everyone else then? A book like this is useful, and it might sell a few hundred thousand copies, but in a world of 6 billion people the numbers are a drop in the preverbial ocean. We need a new tack, that can reach orders of magnitude more people, anyone with ideas, post away.
