Numerous US companies support open source, and if open source is widely adopted in Peru the Peruvians will certainly be able to contribute a lot to the codebase used by US companies.
They are not required to take up all constitutional fights out there. And the fact that they dont does not mean they should be blamed or hated, as they are by many people. They are merely a non profit organization and dont have a duty to do everything. And if they dont do what you like you dont have to support them, but you shouldnt flame them either (well you havent flamed them but ppl on slashdot do).
Remember if it wasnt for the aclu we would have copa still.
The reason why some people dont like the aclu boils down very simply to racism. Racism is still with us unfortunately.
The ACLU's job usually involves protecting the weak, because: 1. their civil liberties get infringed most often 2. they usually cannot afford their own lawyers.
Well the weak often end up being minorities. Of course that is not always true and many non whites have been protected by the aclu.
But in any event their actions of protecting minorities irks a lot of people, especially after these actions have been duly lied about by various media.
But you cannot blame it all on right wing media. Many people are racist, and thats it.
The article raises valid points about the lack of privacy on the net. Yet it is technicaly lacking. It should inform people that it is possible to be annonymous on the net. It is also possible with the help of public key encryption to make sure that nobody can impersonate you, while being completely annonymous.
What i dont like about the article is that it scares people with technology without telling them that the technology does offer a way to solve their problems.
I remember TV a movie where there was this serial killer that was electricuted, but his mind turned into an evil computer virus.
That evil computer virus of course started hounding a woman and her daughter.
But the woman was too crafty for the virus, she duct taped all the electric outlets so the virus was unable to jump out and get her.
who writes this stuff i dont know.
but here is another example from a much more famous movie. Jeff Goldblum in Independance day, sees theres a captured alien craft. The humans know nothing about alien technology and dont even know how to step inside the craft.
But jeff sneezes and has an idea "i will give it a computer virus". So he proceeds to open his apple notebook and "gives" the alien spacecraft a virus. I wonder whether the aliens used usb ports or the "airport".
Is that your bot being used for customer service in certain company's websites, like ATT?
If so are you aware that it is not helpful at all.
Another poster said that AI greatly suffers by its proponents tendencies to exagurate its abilities.
Do you think that selling your bot as a customer service agent is repeat of the above mistake. The bot is obviously unable to fill the role (cannot process the simplest queries) and putting it in that role will only infuriate people and give AI another black eye.
Of course that is only valid if it is your bot, thats being used. The ATT site called the bot Allie so i suspect it is.
no this is not proof that the system works. If the system worked things would have never gotten this far.
Basicly the system depends on stuff being discovered at the accountant - auditing and certifying stage. The system also depends on analysts finding out when things have gone bad. Neither of those happened.
So no the system does not look to be currently working.
But we will see. The system also says that accountants that certify false transactions should be liable for the damgaes that result. We'll see how that turns out.
If the large accounting firms and their partners are held liable for the losses of investors at least the punishment stage of the system will be working.
the only thing a cable company is really doing is renting out pipes. Pipes are channels of communication. Thats it.
If they start looking into those pipes and permitting some information and not other, based on the content of that information, they are excercising censorship.
Censorship does not have to be an action of the government.
your newspaper analogy does not apply. The internet is not a broadcast (one to many) media like a newspaper, even though so many people wish it were.
if a car with flywheel crashes it gets very bad.
these things can jump all over the place still spinning and cutting any one they hit in two.
thats the main reason flywheels are not used on cars.
i cant see why that would be a problem, unless they positioned the fly wheel verticaly which would not be very smart.
how do you know the ambassador is not saying "accept microsoft"?
opensource is trade in a way.
both peru and the us will develop code and it will pass back and forth. And both sides will benefit.
so it is trade. it does not involve money but it does involve usefull ip.
the central government always makes those kind of decisions for their employees.
if they werent mandating open source they would be mandating microsoft.
Numerous US companies support open source, and if open source is widely adopted in Peru the Peruvians will certainly be able to contribute a lot to the codebase used by US companies.
So microsoft!=US in that case.

I dont know how web tv works, but i do know that on a webtv the maker has a complete control over the software and the hardware that runs on it.
And it still has viruses.

the only way to prevent all of this is to use palladium. haha
Infringing on the freedom of speach is a human rights violation.
Fortunately history has shown that italians make really half assed fascists.

you talk about companies like they have their own mind and will.
the executives are the ones that make the decicions and they made out pretty well.
The problem even in the middle of the mass histeria every one is pretending that the offshore banks where all the execs store their loot do not exist.
So even if they take away all their houses cars etc, they would still be billionares.
What they have to do is actually go out there and get that money. Or at least prevent others from putting money there.
Bush is guilty of plenty as well.
The Bush FCC has worked hard to remove any meaningful competition from all media especially internet and radio.
And the patriot act is pretty bad.
but yeah clinton is guilty as well.
The ACLU is responsible for so many of the freedoms and rights that you now enjoy.
What i like a lot about the ACLU is that they protect everyone's liberties, including people that obviously dont deserve them, like you.

there is a difference between "providing every one broadband" and not cencoring the broadband people are already buying.
