  1. Protecting the Artist... on SSSCA Hearing · · Score: 1

"America's creative artists deserve protection." Well what about America's open source community, and hobbiest programmers. They are just as much "creative artists" as anyone else. I suppose their rights are expendable at the whim of the MPAA. I mean what the hell. Companies like the MPAA and the RIAA don't even represent the artists, simply the distribuation companies. They're not trying to protect anything other than their pockets. If congress REALLY wanted to protect artists they'd dismantle these monopolies, but ther aren't willing to give up those big donation checks. As a side note, I'm quite interested to see what happens to politics after some Campaign-Finance reform gets passed. If big business wasn't allowed to buy our representitives with their 'soft money' we might actaully see some meaningful legislation on the floor, issues that actually help the PEOPLE of the country.

  2. ...only to send it to China on California Considering Recycling Fees on PCs · · Score: 1

So now the government is going to charge us extra money only to can ship our old electronics to a hardware dump in Asia? Slashdot I highly doubt any money from this tax will to towards anything but lining the pockets of politicians.

Well maybe YOU wouldn't want something to look like a MicroSoft product, and maybe I wouldn't want it to look an MS product either, but I think, since this is being marketed as desktop, the goal here is to make it so average joe user can feel comfortable using it. Like it or not, people are comfortable with Microsoft. For most, that's all they have known. People are going to be skeptical about completly chaging the way their computer looks and feels. If linux is ever going to take over the desktop market, its going to be gradual. I say go ahead and make it look like windows. As long there are still all the bells and whistles for the power users its no big deal. This is like a 'gateway' linux. Draw people in with a familiar look and feel, and eventually, when they have a taste of the true power of Linux, they wont go back to Windows.

  4. Re:if you want to help the artist... on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 1

Unfortunatly, while I love going to see live performances, and encourage others to do so, many artists still often get screwed get screwed. Remember Pearl Jam's fight for fair priced concert tickets? Against a little company called TicketMaster?? Until the day that artists and their management can deal DIRECTLY with the consumers, without having do deal with the likes of the recording companies or other ripoffs, like TicketMaster, will we see artists getting fairly compensated for their art, as well as consumers getting fairly charged for it. The artists make more, we pay less, the recording companies are screwed, and everything works out.

He didn't say that he thought comparing Republicans to the Third Reich was 'great'. He said that an ESSAY that compared BUSH to HITLER was great. The essy, NOT the idea. There is a disticnt difference. You don't have to agree with it to consider it great reading material. As long as it gets you thinking. We could ALL use a bit more thought in our posts around here imho....
