" WHAT??? As far as I remember, when Win95 has been released in 1995, there were no browser in it. The were no Internet connectivity (dialup) tools in Win95 either, no e-mail. They (and MSIE 1.0) came later, in the beginning of 1996, as a part of Plus! pack, which hasn't been "included" in Windows and it wasn't free - you had to pay $$ to get it.
Although I agree that differences in Windows versions are not that big, they do exist. Everywhere - in GDI, memory management (memory mapping), multithreading support. Win9x and NT are very different in those parts - trust me, I write windows programs for living for 5 years:-). And I've had much less troubles porting Motif/X11/OpenGL programs from IRIX to Linux than porting from Win3.1 to NT - I ported some QuickWin application to NT console - this is the programmer's hell!
Brian never "bashed MS" - he bashed their attitude towards OpenGL etc. They still could hire him to work at OpenGL (it looks like they have not enough resources for 1.2 implementation for W2K) or GDI team (they are currently working on GDI++). Don't forget - Mike Abrash also left id several years ago and was hired by Microsoft. Anything can happen...
