Nuclear technology will not lessen our dependence on foreign oil because nuclear and oil techs are used for different types of energy requirements.
Nuclear tech is currently used for generating heat which turns turbines - to create electricity. Most electricity is created from coal and hydro, not oil.
Oil tech is currently used to create explosions which move pistons - to create motion. Most motion is created from gasoline and diesel fuels derived from oil.
The American Way of Life is dependent on the (relatively) cheap energy oil provides. It sustains suburbia and is responsible for the transit of goods via shipping and people via automobiles and airplanes. There are no nuclear alternatives to this fact.
Scientists warn that demand will soon exceed oil supplies. It is important that we find solutions to fill these demands. Synthetic fuels that may be used in place of distilled light sweet crude is much more important than nuclear tech which is better for some things least of which is autos, ships and airplanes.
I've been thinking a lot about what a song is worth, and the only conclusion I can come to is... nothing.
Perhaps most songs are worth nothing, but a good song that makes a singer and/or band popular, helps them sell many records and t-shirts, and allows them to communicate their music to the masses is worth a lot.
Music is a personal expression, just like a thought or opinion. Thoughts have no monetary value.
Opinions are like a**holes - everybody has one. Same with thoughts. What everyone doesn't have is the ability to perform music well and/or write good songs. This gives them value.
Therefore, the time and effort involved in writing a good song (it is a craft after all) and honing skills as a musician should continue to be compensated for appropriately.
CD quality is nothing more than a marketing term. It is found almost everywhere digital audio other than cd's is sold, from MD's to genre specific streams found on cable and satellite providers.
It's a lie. It is compressed, lacking in clarity and dynamics found on CD. Why more has not been done to prevent the misleading of the buying public over 'CD Quality' is beyond me - heck if Apple is getting berated for claiming World's Fastest PC, one would think 'CD Quality'... Yeah, Joe Q Public really doesn't give a rat's arse so long as it 'Sounds Good'. Blah.
If the signal's were true, uncompressed, CD Quality (as though you were playing the CD in your own box), then the RIAA would have legitimate concerns. But, just like filesharing less than equal 'CD Quality' MP3's have them scrambling over Joe Q. Public's discerning taste in good sound, we'll probably see digital radio DRM in order to prevent less than perfect copies being distributed in order to further their grip on all distros.
Apparently, JQP is content with less than CD Audio. In fact JQP is so content with less than CD Audio that various alternate forms of music distro is cutting into CD sales - even though the audio isn't as good. But it's free, or in the case of iTMS, cost's significantly less.
The fact of the matter is a) CD's are too expensive (for the most part), and b) the mediocre majority just don't care enough about quality to justify continuing to support that model.
overpriced? cheaper than most retailers, dude.
For what? Broadcast quality mp3's?
The songs you download are not 'CD Quality' as corporate would have you believe. So comparing their price to retail CD's doesn't make sense.
Of course if you mean cheaper as in lesser quality, then yeah, you're spot on.
Shameless self promotion. 128k MP3s but if you sub 256 for 128 in the url can download those instead for higher fi.
