    I went years without a TV, so the only time I saw TV was at a hotel, in which case I watched HBO or other premium/ad-free channels. I do own a TV now, but only for netflix streaming. And I occasionally watch Hulu in the browser. So I literally couldn't believe how awful and intrusive the ads were when I was watching the History channel at a hotel a couple weeks ago.

    True. Just this morning, I wondered why there hasn't been any long-term medical study about crotch-punching Mark Zuckerberg for hours at a time. Will you injure your hand? Should you wear gloves? Take breaks every 15 minutes? We just don't know. That's why we need these studies.

    Concering point 2, With Windows 8, Microsoft is adding VDI licensing which boils down to: tablet access requires a CDL license (which costs extra). Unless you're using Windows R/T, of course.

    Hmm... what if Apple was using GPL v3 gcc. iOS 6 comes out with a new (patented) "lick to unlock" feature. 6 months later, Samsung adds "lick to unlock" on their phones. (<stereotype type="asian" offensive="offensive">No copy! we invent all by ourselves!</stereotype>) Apple sues. Samsung sends some commits (and cash) to the FSF and now gcc has "lick to unlock" code.

    If you want to call it that, call it that. But the binding is done at runtime, not at compile time. And it goes through the runtime system. If the method doesn't exist, it can be added on the fly. Or replaced on the fly. Or proxied to another computer. And if you send a message to a NULL object, it doesn't crash.

    [object function: parameter]
    is syntactic sugar for
    objc_sendMesg(object, @selector(function:), parameter)
    which is not the same thing as:
    object->function(object, parameter)

    Vesta has an orbital period of 3.6 years. (Ceres is 4.6 years). Jupiter takes 11.8 years. That means Jupiter has no effect for years ( more than 3.6 or 4.6, respectively) at a time. For comparison, models of the big impact moon formation show the moon coalesced in under than a year.

    If it's good for the goose, why isn't it good for the gander?

    I stand corrected. Why, just last quarter, they had -$86 million in profit selling a hell of a lot of phones! With sales like that, they really ought to exit the phone business to focus on patent trolling.

    And it's an even better move if a patent troll comes along. (Like Motorola demanding H.264 rates based on the full price of the computer, hardware and software). Revenue isn't $200 for the full copy of windows, it's $5 or $10 for the Media Center Pack.

    I can't be the only one that remembers when Windows didn't have mp3 support because they didn't want to pay the royalties.

    Android phones are a commodity item. That means a race to the bottom. Samsung and Microsoft (via patent licensing) are the only people making money off it -- Motorola is in the red. Hell, Oracle/Google court documents showed Google losing money on Android in 2010.

    It's like the PC business all over again -- IBM gave up, Compaq wanted to give up, and Dell is trying to give up. The margins are so small and there's nothing to differentiate one from another. Except for shitty interface "enhancements" (touchpiss, etc).

    This pretty much sounds the death knell for applications that attempt to lock you in. They might not help you migrate, but they can't use copyright laws to prevent the development of competing products.

    In the US, they can use patents. Consider the MICROS~1 extended filename patent for FAT.

    Apple tends to deprecate old APIs (or features or software) and replace it with something new (and perhaps better) which doesn't support everything the old version did. QuickTime vs QuickTime X, Final Cut Pro vs Final Cut Pro X, .mac/mobile.me vs icloud. iCloud will probably gain back some of the missing features, eventually.
