I can tell you that the hoax about charging for email got amazing traction on the Hill. They were even talking about it in senate debates.(Clinton/Lazio) The email cited a fictional congressman and a bill number that could not exist and STILL my former office(a NY Congressman) got thousands of calls and letters about it. If this kind of campaign could be organized to the level of that one, I think it would have an impact because when Congressmen receive that volume of letters, they actually start to listen. Unless of course they are fritz hollings.
Dont get me wrong, i am one of the first ones to think the worse of hollings, tauzin, disney, mpaa, riaa...etc. But i agree that we should wait until they do something before we rip the shit out of them. But then again the IS/.
Im suprised there is less mention of the RIAA, BTW.
As much as I also hate hollings and tauzin, neither of them are listed as supporting this FCC initiative. it merely states that powell wrote to hollings and tauzin. so i think this might be a little inflamatory at this point.
Activism is great and I highly recommend it, but as a former congressional staffer, I can tell you that it would take a campaign on the level several hundred letters to get the staffers to pull their heads out of their asses and take note. That being said, it is not too hard to generate a hundred letters, but they should be thoughtful original letters, not postcards. Staffers often think what they are told to think, and often they are 25 year olds who know nothing about the issue exept the press releases they get from the RIAA. And politicians love nothing more than having their pictures taken with celebrities. ok i am getting of topic here. bottom line....in order for a letter writing campaign to be effective, there needs to be A LOT of letters. Tell them how it affects YOU. And if you are near DC ever, go meet with a staffer for your congressman. That is what they are there for.

I couldnt agree more. That is what would happen if this were really about intellectual property rights. Unfortunately, it is really about the record company or whatever being able to rip your ass for another 15 or 30 bucks when you scratch your cd/dvd.
Tauzin-Dingell, while likely to pass the House, faces a difficult road in the Senate. Senator Hollings, who chairs the committee of jurisdiction(commerce, science and trans) i believe has sworn up and down that he would kill this bill. I would not truly get upset about this turkey of a bill until the Senate thinks about debating it.(even though bashing the bells, verizon in particular, is a favorite pasttime of mine)
