In the department I'm in at my university (Michigan Tech.) We switched over to Sun Rays with Citrix clients for the Windows applications that are needed for some courses. As a side note Citrix clients are available for students to download for their home systems if they don't want to use the labs. They do have smart cards available for use with the Sun Rays. These cards are now the student ID cards on campus. The Sun Rays replaced the full PC labs that were replaced because of cost cutting. Only being a student I have no idea of what the actual numbers are or how much money is being saved, but I'm sure that if you asked the department would pass some numbers along and their reasoning behind the decision.
