Listening to the NPR interview, the pilot still had some control of the plane, he could have flown to a remote airport and landed safely saving himself and the plane. As it happen he saved himself, but the plane was substantually damaged. If he lost control on the way to the remote airport, he could have used the chute at that time. I think he had a pre-mature parachute ejection.
