The sad part of this is:
It's possible. MS already has told hardware vendors no "OS-less" hardware. They could use this to constrict the users, as the hardware route didn't help them all that much...
Glad I recently migrated to Mac OS X.:) Mmm, pretty Unix...
Uhm...no. Aqua is extremely snappy (I'm writing this on a 600mhz iBook, 10.2.1, and it feels as snappy as an 800mhz-1ghz Intel). And yes, I have run WinXP, and various linuxes. Now, if your girlfriend took the time to upgrade to 10.2, you'd see OS X isn't sluggish. Please, don't spread unfounded claims of bad performance.
As for Samba, I believe you can download a binary of it. Come on, please do try.
As for being "one" with you machine: OS X can do it, and better than Linux. And way better than Windows [Vers]. You can do all the programming, shell scripting, perl scripting, command line editing you want. And you don't really ever have to worry about totally fsking up yer sys. Trust me.
So, spend some more time with the system before you write this type of post, eh?:) If you can get the hardware, I highly reccomend OS X (Been using it for 3 weeks now, switched from Linux/FreeBSD/XP (Hated using XP, though)) to any, and every, computer user. Be they 'users' or 'power-users'.:)
FYI, the "dog slow" classic runs about as fast (Ok, maybe a bit slower) than OS 9.2 does! And this is on my G3 iBook. Of course, if you ever -run- OS 10.2.* then you would know that! (I'm running 10.2.1, and it's nice and fast). Plus you get *nix goodies; come on now, you long time Mac users are real stick-in-the-muds... =p
On a serious note, it seems the writing only needs the heat, not the reading and/or storing, so turning off the PC won't corrupt it, as previously noted. Good to know...though it seems we all need lasers in our HardDrives now.
As previously stated here open source seems to be a good way to go.
Though there are hurdles. For one, Intel and AMD may not want whatever 'IP' is in these benchmark programs getting released into the open source world. Also, this would most likely make it easy(ier) for biased sites to edit the code, and post their (tinkered with) results without posting the edited code.
Mind you, those would be some kinks to work out; but an open source benchmark program would, in my opinion, be the only way to truly avoid the biasing toward each chip maker (That is if they honestly used the OSS benchmarker).
Check out this [freebsd.org] for a floppy based FreeBSD, known as PicoBSD. It includes a few nice little tools, as well; you can have a dialup version, router version or networking version. All in all it's a nice little system!
Awww, I missed it. Guess Dialup is too slow to get a fp. Ohwell...hehe
Hrm, I have to wonder about this. I mean, how would you like to wear your deceased loved one? Or, maybe more appropriatly, how would you like to be created into a rock? I'm not sure how this owuld go over with my family; I sure as heck wouldn't wish to wear my Mother/Father/Other Loved One's remains on a ring, pin, necklace, earring or other. It seems kind of morose...

That's from their site; at least they don't try to hide it too hard (Mine you, it was in fine print...)

May I ask what crashes yer talking about in Mac OS X? No WAY you are an actualy Mac user.
Hemos, do -not- listen to this...user. I've yet to have my Mac crash. He obviously uses a) Not a Mac, or b) Os 9.
Get an iBook/TiBook; I just recently switched from SuSe/XP, and I love it. :)
I've just seen it on the Apple -- Unix Downloads page. I personally haven't needed Samba yet.
But see? You don't even need to "set it up"! :)

Ah, bravo!
Course, who says "God" isn't a liar...? Or deciever? Considering he/she/it's supposibly been hiding from us all this time...
Actually, StarLogo has beenout for quite a while; you could have downloaded it in 2000, or farther back :)
Uhm...look below it. The google story is there. *sigh*
Trust me, the benifits outweigh the cons.
It only gets hot once it hits the atomosphere. And the kevlar will hit before that.
I -had- to clear that up. =)
No wonder, too!
Now wonder he doesn't get ranked highly on google...they're afraid of breaking him.
Does this seriously offend anyone else? Can IPs be banned on /.? If so..this one should be.
This seriously pisses me off. Fucking moronic skinhead bastards.

Those of you looking for it can find it here. for other Linux floppy distros, check out this.
It also seems there are a few more mini *BSD 'distros' out there. Now we can add the embedded *BSD to the list! =)

I think I gots the fp! =D
Yea... Hold up, can -I- mod comments? I didn't think I could... Yea, sound slike a conspiracy. Let's rebel!
I would like to point out that this was modded -1, 'Offtopic' below. I'd be interested to know how it went from -1 Offtopic to +5 Insightful...
I too thought he said santa fe for a second...
