in my computer science classes i always added commands to mail me when someone was running my homework programs--just out of curiosity. of course the TAs could never read the source of everyone's program, so the danger of it being discovered was insignificant.
turns out the programs were usually run directly under the TA or professor's UID, so it could easily have been destructive (or constructive!).
