  1. Re:Adobe says they'll support Linux ... on Adobe May Launch Office Rival · · Score: 1, Interesting

Adobe expects a Linux version of the AIR runtime to be completed in the coming months.

Adobe's always limped along when it came to linux development. From what I've seen of their flash support, I'm not expecting anything much when it comes to air compatibility. Flash 9 for linux has been in beta how long now, and this is after a huge wait with no flash 8 and a buggy flash 7. Given that air's already available for windows and osx, but not linux, I don't see much reason to believe anything's changed.

  3. Re:I stipulate that it is dead - so what? on Baiji River Dolphin May or May Not Be Extinct · · Score: 1

I don't care too much if we're around, or dolphins for that matter. What I do care about is sentient life, animals able to contemplate their own consciousness. It's taken a really long time for that to evolve, and I'm not so certain that the planet has enough time left to get it into a tool using state, and off planet. Right now sentience has us as a representative. There might be more in space, but I do care that the only species we're a 100% sure of lives on. Dolphins, too, I care about for their place as a second tier species in regards to ourselves. They're very different, and not likely to ever get into advanced tool use due to their water bound state. But they're still a nice look into the mirror as far as language using mammals go.

  4. Re:i read somewhere on Baiji River Dolphin May or May Not Be Extinct · · Score: 1

Because they're immensely important to studying how consciousness works. We don't have a lot of ape species to experiment on, but the second tier on the cognitive spectrum is dolphins. Most significant in this aspect are the species which have diverged from the main lines long ago. This one in particular was very unique in that aspect, and we've never gotten around to properly studying it in that regard. Data on how consciousness both functions, and more importantly how it evolves, is now potentially unavailable.

Don't know if their developers have improved since I left the hosting game, but I recall 9/10 times something seriously screwed up on a clients vps it would be from them upgrading cpanel.

I respect older people who are technologically knowledgeable more and more every time an article like this comes down the pipes. Listening to Dawkins talk about how much fun he had anonymously watching and speaking to people, who were watching a recorded speech from him, online was literally awe inspiring. At a fairly high age as far as what the world was like in his youth, he's still seeing more to it than most of the western world's youth. And then, on the other hand, here we have someone so terrified of the new that he wants to tear it all down rather than figure out ways of letting it serve as a medium to further develop his craft.

  12. Re:artists are having a hard time not being heard. on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 4, Insightful

And I think that's exactly what a lot of people are terrified about. I've bought a fairly large amount from itunes, and none of it's been from a riaa label. Pandora, lastfm, and word of mouth over the internet actually give me the chance to discover new music that would have been locked in a garage or small town ten years back. And itunes, and similar, the chance to purchase from them. It's a win for the consumer, but a huge loss for both the labels and the select few they decide to favor.

And it doesn't even have to be one or the other. We moved into a new town fairly recently, and it only took a few weeks for my wife to join a band here. Nor did that fact stop her from continuing to market her solo stuff online. Much in the same way that I can use a telephone on occasion, and yet the scary technology doesn't in any way prevent me from talking to people in person. I'm just hoping that I don't wind up like so many old people when I reach that age, railing against technologies I don't understand.

  14. Oh no! on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 4, Insightful

Are we not fawning over "celebs" enough? Not constructing enough temple record stores, to be preached to in a condescending manner if we pick up the wrong album? Are we actually daring to put their music in the same store as a lesser known artist? Or, perhaps his music might even be sharing the same server on itunes as one of us common ruffians?

What's been lost is trivial to what's been gained. I had a grin a mile wide when I realized that some of my favorite artists, talented but not at all well known or mainstream enough to get a label's attention, could be purchased from the same itunes interface as the latest plastic pop idol.

This kind of shit happens everywhere, and it's really only by having the protection of the guns of any particular country that you gain any measure of freedom past the average level that the man on the street considers the lowest possible. It sucks, but this is the reality of the situation.
