One thing I like about FTP is that most clients allow you to select multiple files and grab them all in one shot. I think that you can do this with wget over HTTP, but I don't know of any web browsers that can.
Actually there is a company called Pelco, who specializes in video surveillance equipmment. They make a line of digital video recorders which can digitally "watermark" captured images. From what I understand, their method has been accepted in several states as admissable in court.
1. PHP is a little easier to learn than Perl (at least it was for me).
2. PHP was designed specifically to generate dynamic HTML, whereas Perl seems to be more of a general purpose language.
Then again, sometimes it depends upon the application. There are some things that may be easier to implement in one language than the other, you may need the features of one that the other lacks, etc...
Great idea, but it may already be patented. Telemechanique has the "clickable" transparent keys on some of their Magelis touchscreens. I've seen these in action... Very neat!!
I agree that the non-uniformity of X apps is a bit annoying. But I think that the advantage of having more choices far outweighs the drawbacks you speak of.
I don't know about this Air Force program, but the training I received through the Navy's Nuclear Power program was far from dumbed down and slow paced. Completing my BS in Computer Engineering was a hell of a lot easier than Nuke School!!
But I fully agree with your other points about being stripped of your individualism, etc.
My advice is this: Don't go into the military unless you have absolutely no where else to go.

Well, I have a couple of opinions.

Others may, and probably will, disagree

Just a thought: Would your boss would be more willing to hire someone *part-time* to handle the backups?

I'd also like to suggest fvwm2. It's also a very lightweight and fast window manager, and you can still use KDE and Gnome apps if you like.
