But your computer spews crap into allocated frequencies. It just does it a power levels low enough to be undetectable. UWB does it a power levels ten times smaller again.

I believe that UWB devices in consumer electronics will operate below the power levels mandated for everyday electronic devices such as OLD laptops, in other words they comply with existing emmisions standards. The NASA tests must have been done with UWB at higher power levels. The article indicates that the CAA is aware of the difference.

  3. Privacy vs. Utility on Sentient Computing Lab · · Score: 1

We don't force people to wear bats around our lab, but they do. The reason is that they give useful services which people want. Think of your machine's IP address - it can be used to find you, but provides some benefits. We also have "quiet zones" which are places you can put your bat if you don't want to be seen. Or just take your bat off and drop it on the desk.

The bat opens doors so you don't have to take your keys out; notifies you of email and phone calls, which you can then access at the nearest computer or phone; allows you to drop any of your VNC desktops onto the nearest workstation; allows you to determine when someone is in a meeting or on the phone and therefore saving you a fruitless walk over to their office; and so on.

And yes, it is fantastic watching everyone moving around on the magic map.

Maybe in the US you rarely feel the effect of multiple regions! In the UK DVDs sell because it is easy to get hold of chipped players so you can play the cheaper US or Canadian DVDs which come out earlier and also have more goodies on them.

  5. Thumbnail Calculation of Impact on Wave Driven Generators · · Score: 1

From the CIA world fact book, I see that the 1998 power consumption of the UK was 343 billion kWh. This translates, by my calculation, to about 78,000 of these LIMPET generators. From the pictures I estimate that they are about ten meters wide. So this gives us a total of 783 km of coastline to match the entire 1998 electricity demand. The coastline of the UK is 12,429 km. So we would need about 1/15th of our coast to match out requirements. Of course we are lucky on this count because we are a small island with large ratio of coast to area. Anyway, gives you some idea.
