My first linux was also from Slackware (popular distribution 2.7? with "the stable kernel" 1.2.13) It was included in PCW november 1996 (I guess) I fidled with it for two days until I got it somewhat working (it didn't want to support my 1.6G WD hard disk) I ended up with booting from floppy. I was a 14 years old boy back then who just wanted to look at something different. I guess I was one of the first latvians to use it. Now I'm using Linux for server purposes in my dad's office and getting paid for it.
