  1. Re:#5 Menu Bar is enough reason to not change on Apple Explains Interface Differences · · Score: 4, Informative

Apple has found that using one menu at the very top increases productivity. "What? You're crazy!" you say. No seriously, the theory is (and it is not Apple's theory, they just adhere to it) is that in order to get to a menu item a user can simply throw their cursor to the top of the screen and 'overshoot' the menu because it is at the very top, in this sense the menu is located at a place of infinite height and is very easy to get to. Now think about a Windows setup where the menu is at the top of any respective window, a user must provide a bit of care/control to get to the menu item because it is possible to overshoot the menu. It doesn't take EXTREME care, it is a minor point, but even with distance and proximity involved (menu at top of screen vs. menu at top of window), you'd have to agree that it is easier to simply 'throw' your mouse to the top of the screena and not worry about overshooting it.

  2. Challenged on Priot Art? on Suddenly a JPEG Patent and Licensing Fee · · Score: 1

I've just bounced off uspto.gov and read a bit of their patent. To quote their first claim

"... more frequently occurring values of digital signals are represented by shorter code lengths and the less frequently occurring values of digital signals are represented by longer code lengths..."

Tell me if I'm wrong, but is this not the Huffman coding scheme? I always thought that jpeg's compression was based on Huffman?

"Music apps like Cubase that just aren't available for Intel PCs are essential to the cutting-edge musician"

First, I must say that I am avid Mac fan and a musician who has been using Cubase for about 4 years now. I did want to point out, (is this REALLY Elton John?), that Cubase is indeed available for the PC platform. In fact, Cubase SX hit has already hit the market for the PC whilst we are still waiting on the 'X' side. Such is life...

  5. What's this about a CRT only? on Under Attack by PanIP's Patent Lawyers? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apparently, the "authors" of this "invention" were not very forward-thinking as the usage of an LCD screen (instead of a CRT) will put a user outside the scope of this patent. Snipped directly from the Patent: "The satellite facilities are sales and information terminals, each equipped with a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) for receiving and displaying requested customer information from the computer's data sources at the data processing center. Customers interactively display the audio-visual presentations by selecting various choices and entering the choices on a telephone keypad which directs the computer to select from its data sources the requested information and transmit it to the customer's CRT in their home" Hmm...
