Hmmm, deregulation might have caused cable companies to jack their proices, but cometition has made them lower them again. I live in an area where RCN has been going head to head with ATT, and cable prices keep dropping. Or as a counter example...what do you think will happen now that Dish Networks and DirectTV are merging...Will this lead to better service for the consumer or increased rates. Almost all public libraries have internet access now...that's enough for societies responsibility to itself ot be connected IMHO.

Before an nameless evil company that makes PDA's and is named after a part of your hand bought and then closed us, we made a very complicated online calendar app for them. It scaled to handle 100k+ requests/transactions daily, and as far as I know still handles all their wireless registration, etc. We predated EJB's but we had rolled our own analagous beasts. We had started out on IIS (shudder) and after careful consideration moved to Resin. In addition to being superb, stable and fast, we found that the support that Scott (the head tech over at Caucho) was willing to give us was superb! We looked at TomCat tried it in our QA env, and it didn't hold up to even casual stress testing. Resin running on jdk1.4 with HotSpot--mmmmm, good. Responded well to tweaking nursery size etc, but ran well out of the box too.
