  1. Re:No Offsite Built-in, etc. on Review of the Mirra Home Backup System · · Score: 1

The mirra is an OK personal local backup solution. A better small business solution is the RocketVault "www.intradyn.com". The RocketVault does offer off-site storage and both local and off-site encryption. It also doesn't require any client software and scales up to 4TB. Network World has tested it and considers it to be in a different class than the Mirra and other all-in-one devices "http://www.nwfusion.com/net.worker/columnists/200 3/1215gaskin.html" I think it is an alternative to tape backup and anything is more reliable than tape.

This is a great article. Jim Grey' idea of shipping boxes around really makes sense, but he talks about spending $400 to ship his 300MB a heavy computer, why not use a 10 pound terabyte box. I have to believe it would be cheap ship a 10 lb archiving appliance like the RocketVault " http://www.intradyn.com/products/specs.php" ? You could also have this thing do all the work, set it up to get the data over the network and e-mail you when it's done. Then pack it up and ship it. Since everything is self contained all you need at the other end in a network connection to restore the data.

"One folder for offers from Nigerians to make me rich, one folder for penis enlargement, and one folder for pr0n offers... that handles about 99% of my incoming email." We must be on the same mailing lists. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a universal scam filter for this stuff. I wonder how many people might be interested in contributing to a filter project that would be updated by the group on a daily basis. I am getting sick of the Nigerians that started contacting me a couple months ago. I think the penis enlargement and Viagra are from Windows users that have my address and a virus, because they started coming about the same time last month.

I would assume they use 10/100/1000 switched Ethernet on the consumer side and buy much smaller circuits from the big guys. Like so many posters have said it would be great within the ISP's network, but web browsing will be limited to the backbone connection.

  6. Re:Replay on Tivo 2 Features On the Horizon · · Score: 1

featuritis? Is broadband conectivity featuritis? I don't think the lawsuit has kept Tivo from having similar features as Replay, I think the lawsuits were basic functions, like recording and using a guide to select what to record. Tivo is playing catch up and Replay is innovating.

  7. Re:Replay has the best technology, what's going on on Tivo 2 Features On the Horizon · · Score: 1

Replays updates are live now, with a broadband connection. I think Replay can do remote set up as well. Replay does have the the same feature as season pass. Is everyone brainwashed or what? What exactly does Tivo have that Raplay doesn't. IMHO Replay is the best box available today and appears to be better than the next generation of Tivo too.

  8. Replay has the best technology, what's going on? on Tivo 2 Features On the Horizon · · Score: 1, Troll

OK, Tivo leaked some new features, but hasn't SonicBlue had most of those for over a year. I have had a DVR for almost 2 years, but it lacks some of the cool features Replay has had for a long time. I should have purchased a Replay last year. I want a Replay now, because it really can skip commercials (a friend has one), I won't have to fast forward through them like I do now. Replay came out with an Ethernet compatible network unit in 2001. They are the technology leader, Tivo is playing catch up. What is wrong with this picture? Replay is clearly a better product, costs less, has been around as long as Tivo (has the main patents), but they don't have a cult. This is nothing like the Mac cult, the Mac has always been the technology leaded and they are still more expensive. Tivo is well behind the technology leader and more expensive. Is it the early branding that they established using TV commercials all that's carrying them? What's up here?

  9. The TiVo cult on Interview with SONICblue's CEO · · Score: 1

It seems like TiVo is more of a cult than a business (see link http://slate.msn.com/?id=2072037 ). SonicBlue looks like a much better company to me. I stopped watching TV a few years ago (except sports), then last year I bought a Dish DVR it allows me to watch what I want, when I want. Some of my friends have DVR's and the SonicBlue one is clearly the best. I watch 1 hr a day of TV and it's exactly what I want to see. I want a Replay so I can watch 1 1/2 hours of programming during my hour.
