  1. Re:Yes, "giant robots" on Evangelion Reviewed In LA Times · · Score: 1

Actually, since the root to the word "robot" is actually to do with the slave nature of the devices and not the mechanical nature (the "universal robot" concept was meaning universal slave, which was applied to machines); then the use of the phrase as Evas as Giant Fighting Robots is applicable, seeing as they were built for man to serve man.

Hey, dang it...I live in Hunstville (and study Physics, Philosophy and History at UAH)...and there is plenty to do, for me at least...a lot of us just like the change the way we look at things here (like being a largely mixed-race community in the midst of the south).

The concrete team is a very interesting group of people. Now, I am more into the theoritical side of things...and not the engineering...but the fact that they are using something that most people don't think twice about and putting it uses that catches people off guard...I say good job to them.

  3. Re:Only 1 Knot? on Sea Gliders for Other Worlds · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually, I think they are shooting for frustatingly slow. Perpetual motion is not an option...and longly-sustained-low-energetic motion is only an option for a fair time. Longly-sustained-high-energy is almost unattainable as far as we know. So, they have to go with low-energy to make it longer-sustained. At least this would be pertinent with space exploration. Earth exploration could allow for "recharges." Of course, if it takes it 3 months of time to get its data...then I feel it would be well worth it. On Earth though, as opposed to Europa, it might still be worth it but I see little use to such things unless they are somewhat fixed in later models.

  4. Re:Problems with a reverse heat gradient on Sea Gliders for Other Worlds · · Score: 3, Interesting

Not only are you correct about the heat flow changing the way we think about water (we could feasibly due tests near to "lava" rifts in our own ocean floor to make sure it works)...there is a lot of speculation as to its center. If it gets there, and the heat gradient has been misjudged...then the balance will be off. If it gets there, and it turns out that the heat gradient is extremely variable from one point to another...then the balance will be off.

Also, if it gets there...and it turns out the liquid is too thick or (due to extra-fluid movement) too thin...then...yep, the balance will be off. The fact is that, while I am almost in love with the tech-idea, I don't want to wait for six or seven years just to say "Oops...let's try again, adjust up point 03 on the reaction slope" and then wait another how many years to here "Oops...ok, we are going to need..."

Dang it! It would break my Heart!

  7. Re:cripple on Professor Testifies Windows Is Modular, Separable · · Score: 1

This IS a problem. The growing number of new computer uses have problems understanding the idea of installing new drivers, much less setting up new software. If their computer has the Microsoft version, then they likely won't even consider it as something to think about. I have seen computer users get horribly confused when they move to a new computer that has a different layout of desktop icons. These people have no interest in installing competing software unless someone does it for them. But then, if the computer lacked the software...they would probably just go to the OS that came with it...so I don't guess I can complain because the solution (the OS being removed from its non-OS components like a good OS should be) would be above the level of interest shown.
Those that care enough about their computer to install the new components (if not new OS, like me and many others) know how to do so and will look beyond what the latest Windows tries so hard to force you to use. Those who do not, likely will not...causing that long assumed to illusionary gap between the casual user and the more serious user to become a larger one.

  8. Star Wars as fun versus... on Star Wars as Pulp Sci-Fi · · Score: 1

I dearly love Star Wars when I take it as a fun and campy type movie (series). When it is cheesy good-guys fighting somewhat less cheesy bad guys and the somewhat less cheesy bad guys are doing really bad things such as blowing up planets, sacrificing dancing women to monsters and getting beat by dumbfluck Luke Skywalker...then we are looking at what I would say is the best aspect of the films...their fun factor. Now, the more you analyze Star Wars the less fun it gets...for me...so I stopped. I am not stupid to say it is a great film...but it is a great film to watch and get into. (of couse, I am possibly the only person in the world not pissed off at the Ewoks (though wookies would have been cooler).

  9. movies, schmovies on Square and Disney Team Up for Kingdom Hearts · · Score: 1

Sure the latest Final Fantasies have had wonderful movies to look at, there games are far more than the movies. Roughly speaking, you get just about as much gameplay (if not more) in the modern games plus you get about an hour (oh my god, an hour of movies in a 40 hour game...its ALL FMV, isn't it?) of movie content as well. I still play them all. Now, with that being said, I do think that Kingdom Hearts is supposed to addressed more to kids than to adults, but I am sure it will be somewhat enjoyable to everyone else. Disney may or may not be evil (a personal choice), but Square is at least a True Neutral diety (yes, an RPG reference). As for how MGS2 and GTA3 compared to Final Fantasy 10, I have no idea about which sold more but I would say that critics tended to look at them close to the same. I personally thought FFX was a better game (but then I tend to prefer that sort over those sorts) but I realize the other two are good as well.
