  1. Actually... on Microsoft Typography Withdraws Free Web Fonts · · Score: 1

There are more important reasons for choosing a typeface than style, like usability.

Times New Roman is a serif typeface. Serif typefaces are easier to read on paper because of the subtle detail such as thick and thin lines, hooks and feet. On a computer screen with a much lower resolution than paper the subtleties of serifs degrade and san serifs can be easier on the eyes.

Usability studies show that people read san serif typefaces faster on the screen than serifs, the opposite of what happens on paper. That's why standard OS UI elements are nearly always in san serif, and books are nearly always in serif

I can't find any comments from Jakob Nielsen on the subject, but his site uses a san serif typeface.

  2. And then we'll all drive spaceships to work on The Future of Real-Time Graphics · · Score: 2, Insightful

It may be the case that in, say, 2005 for example, you can create CGI graphics on your home computer that are equal to the quality of 2002 movie graphics. But the movie graphics standard won't be sitting still - it will always be ahead. Both will always get better. CGI studios will always be willing to invest more in their equipment than a home user, and they will always be able to get better results by spending more money. You can't convince me that someday the $200 video card in my home PC will be equal to the cluster of high-end hardware sitting in Lucas Arts server room at that same moment.

Is there a way to play DOS games on a Mac that I don't know about?

  4. Ok, but... on Death to the 3.5" Floppy? · · Score: 1

Yes, there are valid reasons for continuing to use a floppy as many here have pointed out. But it seems equally clear (from my own experience and anecdotal evidence on this thread and elsewhere) that those uses are few and far between. So why _not_ get rid of the floppy as a default option and let those who still need them pay the extra $10 to get one? Why persist offering it as a standard when usage of a floppy is clearly non-standard?

It's high time that the open source community come together to create a patent-free mythology where elves may freely give out PNGs unencumbered from the burdens of proprietary formats.

  7. Re:Translation: on Does Drawing on Experience Infringe on Other's IP? · · Score: 1

I disagree. If I implement a system for Company B similar to what I had previously developed for Company A, Company A may choose to sue me instead of suing Company B. So this guy should throw up his hands and make it Company B's problem. Let them do the legal work, let them get sued. He's just looking out for himself and I don't blame him one bit.

  8. Come on! on Scotland: Aliens' Official Favorite Destination · · Score: 1

Everybody knows that the aliens aren't that stupid. When they've got you strapped to the table they can do whatever they want to your mind. Clearly they're not going to let people remember anything they don't want them to remember. They're obviously letting people in certain areas remember the sightings or abductions to cover up their real activities. Find the place with the lowest reported incidence of UFO activity and that's where you'll find the launching ground for the pending invasion.

    Duh.

  9. Re:I disagree.. on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

And, in the end, this is better for Moby. Musicians don't make squat off of CD sales, at least not until they move into the megastar U2/REM category. They stand to get about 4-5 cents per disc sold, minus the millions they have to reimburse the record label for producing the album and the marketing to support it, including videos.

Musicians typically make most of their money from concert tickets and T-shirt sales from the concerts. If due to people pirating his music Moby sells fewer CDs but gets a larger distribution he still stands to benefit overall when those people pay to see his concert. The record labels may or may not get hurt by the rise of file swapping. I tend to believe that it increases sales. But that debate aside, you'll find few musicians who will object too loudly, unless they're completely clueless.

  10. Consequences? on Blogspace vs. NPR · · Score: 1

What happens if I ignore their linking policy? More importantly, if I post a link on Slashdot, will Slashdot suffer the unnamed consequences, or will I? What if I'm an Anonymous Coward?

If this becomes a trend and begins to be followed up with legal action, will any site that allows the posting of user content be forced to strip out any links in that content for fear of being subject to the linking policies of other sites?

  11. Re:Go? on France to Impose $1/Gigabyte Hard-Drive Tax · · Score: 2, Interesting

Don't get the idea that the French need to have their own word for everything. Before I lived in Paris I was scared by the stories we see in the US all the time saying how the French are such purists about letting English invade their language, so I spent time learning to say things like "la toile" (lit. the web). When I got to France people told me I sounded like an idiot and to just say "le Web" like everyone else.

  12. Re:Projectors? on How to Build The Perfect Home Theater PC · · Score: 1

I only have one projector, so I can't speak to the ones you've heard, but mine is whisper quiet. The drone on my PC from trying to cool the Athlon is much, much louder. I don't notice the fan when I'm watching a movie, even in silent scenes. I don't get true blacks, but I do get a 100+" screen. Price was $2200, plus another $150 on cables/adapters. The bulb should last 2000 hours, which means I can watch a movie every day for 3 years before I have to replace it at a cost of around $400. I strongly recommend that anyone even vaguely interested in a projector or home theater spend some time on http://www.avsforum.com/, where you will learn everything you'll ever need to know.
