y'know, Anno is Anno. That means he cannot do something real ordinary. I still get some shivers while watching mid-way Nadia episodes, and that was supposed to be just a Vernes-like kids tale! Of course Nadia's ending is a real wreck, but the mid-way episodes leave no doubts about the fact that the same man created NGE.
I've also read another opinion on this, that Anno did care more for the characters than for the plot. And he finished what he wanted to finish in eps 25-26. But later on, hearing constant flames about those episodes, he created something like 'you want action? you really want it? you asked for it'. And killed everybody in the most brutal manner. Don't irritate the creator:)))
