  2. As a scientist... on How Common Is Scientific Misconduct? · · Score: 1

I am surprised it is this small. I am sure part of the liars (which is what they are) are doing it for fame and to be the one. Others (liars too) are doing it to keep their jobs, whether that be to get money to do science, or just to cling on. And forget turning someone in. It will ruin your career.

What you are thinking about is called long-term non-progressers. If the virus can't actually get into the cell, which is what we are talking about here, means that while there might be some HIV in the blood (floating around in the liquid part), it can't actually infect any of the cells. No infection, no disease.

  4. Re:So you need immune bone marrow? on German Doctor Cures an HIV Patient With a Bone Marrow Transplant · · Score: 1

The genetic 'defect' that causes people to be immune to HIV is not very common in the US. Descendants from the Western European countries have a higher probability of having these mutations.

So glad that someone pointed this out. There is actually a naturally occuring mutation in this gene that renders people resistant. It is more predominant in the western european population. Summaries like this are why the US population doesn't know anything about science.

    Um, no.
As a person who will probably never give up the tangible book with pages (and I am 30, I don't know where that puts me in your 'younger generation'), I have to disagree.
There is more to the book culture than my shelf is bigger than yours.

I look over the shoulder of someone that I am sitting behind on the bus to check out what book they are reading.
    I lend out books.
    I write in mine.
I like the smell of books.
    I borrow books.
I sell books to the used bookstore.
    I utilize libraries.

I am not likely to do any of these with a e-book reader.

Also, my eyes get tired reading screens. I am less likely to read in the tub. I certainly am not going to put a $400 reader on the kitchen counter while I am trying to cook a recipe. I am not going to travel with an expensive thing that I am apt to lose and not be able to replace right away.

If one of these e-book readers takes off it totally voids good cover art. Just imagine people getting skins for their readers. It's just gluttony.

  7. Re:Embryonic Stem Cells - not a threat on Stem-Cell-Like Cells Produced From Skin · · Score: 1

There is a very defined point when we cannot continue life after 'conception'. If we make embryo's, and try to continue them until they form a baby there is a critical point where maturation stops. Why can't everyone get together and say: look, there is this period between these 2 critical timepoints, and there is nothing we can do to move forward. Why can't after that critical timepoint be life? There is nothing we can do before that (aside from implanting into a uterus) to make a human. I, for one, am not going to offer up my uterus for implantation. I would however, let my eggs be used, as I don't plan on using them.

Most of the hard science majors I know didn't get there because of their K-12 education.

I wholeheartedly agree. I remember as a child *hating* science classes. Up until 14 I wanted to be a musician, after that a writer.

I went to college to be a science teacher, and was appalled. They concentrate more on the teaching than the science (now, i am not saying that being able to effectively communicate an idea is wrong to learn) but these idiots were getting D's in their science classes. Maybe the problem that no one goes into science is because of this phenomena.

Happily to say, I am pursuing a Ph.D in the sciences. It has nothing to do with my experience as a child. It has everything to do with the women who taught me calculus. She was a real encouragement to me going on to grad school.

And for all those people who say that women don't go into sciences: you should check out the men:women ration at schools of public health. All of the ones in the US have more women.
