are you sure thats RESIDENT memory ?, if I remember rightly the memory usage from ps includes how much memory is being used on your graphics card.. or something like that:).
I was considering freebsd due to advice from a few people (I normally run debian), but this has pretty much made my mind up!. I be getting freebsd once I get my dsl connection running...
I use Anjuta, the most buggy part I find is the debugger:), I've resorted to learning how to use gdb from the console.
I think the current version (which is based on gtk1.2) isn't get much attention at the moment due work on Anjuta 2 (which uses GTK2).
I am quite happy with linux as a desktop OS, I use it on my laptop at home, has Debian 3.0, gnome 1.4 moz, xchat... and I find it fine. I use it for doing a bit of C/C++ and Java programming and my main pc for playing games (win2k).
I assume that someone thats never used a computer before might be a bit baffled by my setup (theres no text on the panel, just some very small icons to save as much desktop space as posible).
For me linux isn't dead on the desktop, but then I am not a normal clueless user:).
There is allready a open source clone of opengl called mesa http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net/
So we can assume they will update mesa to suport the new opengl standard (hopefully:).
Also, once nvidia updates there opengl driver for windows it should be aviabled in there linux drivers too.
Theres no good reason at all to develop a new 3D api, for a start it would takes years to design and implement, and then it would need support from hardware manufactures either in there own implementation or providing specifications for there hardware....
The qoute from the article: "It didn't allow consumers to keep downloaded songs permanently." pretty much sums why its was doomed for failure.
Lets see.. advantages of buying a CD, I can rip it to mp3/ogg and Ccpy it to my PC for listening to (and upload it to my protable mp3 player). And very importantly, I get to put the CD on my shelf with the rest of my collection.
Oh but wait that make me a priate so I will go spend my money on music that I don't actually get to own... sounds logical to me:).
I was wondering what you mean by "Debian is barely more than a kernel".
Don't know if your refering to the same debian that I know. The debian I know is project (ran by volulteers) to develiver a very high qaulity Operating System accoss a number of diffrent platforms. Presently the main flavour of debian 'GNU/Linux', but theres others in the work.
Debian is pretty damn easy to configure to your needs, and doesn't do nasty things (can I say Yast from SuSE) like overwriting config files you have edited directly.
Agreed the article pretty much covers all *nix's, and from what I can see most, if not all of the vulnerabilities have been fixed allready...
It seems to have good bindings to most tookits, I wonder how pratical it would be, lets for writing small to medium sized gnome applications, instead of using C#...
It does look like the code is very neat, and easy to prduce maintainable code. This is a big plus for software engineer (like me).
I've also stayed clear of perl because of this, most of the perl code I've seen looks horrible:p.
I have nothing againest perl, I've seen some pretty neat stuff done with regular expressions.
you be mad to use this as a DVD replacement, DVD players are much cheaper!
it would be more usefull for something like a DivX player (think 6 channel out;-) and as a MP3/ogg jukebox...
to reduce the noise you can also down clock one the cpu, I've seen some stuff on the web where someone has removed the fan from the PSU (apprently one of the noisest fans), and mounted heat sinks on the bits of PSU that get hot...

Congrads to nvidia.
At this rate, the OpenBEOS team will have the entire OS rewritten before the hurd kenel gets to version 1.0 :).
Wonder if its running Jaluna OS ?.

looking at the screen shots of Fathammer it looks pretty good.
:).
Also I would say most of the games are demos to show of the SDK, comparing to doom which is a complete polished game is not really fair
quite impresive considering the spec of the devices that they run on.
why do this sort of stuff ?, because you can and its fun :)
This one has web cams as eyes, it can see you!.
.. for who ??

TV in the UK is transmitted at 50 fps interlaced, to match the freqency of the mains.
:b.
Since the signal is interlaced, so the TV is actually displaying the image at 25fps. (it takes 2 cycles at 50fps to totally repaint the picture).
linux has samba support, you need it as a module (smbfs.o) or built into the kernel.
:).
Might be worthing reading 'man mount'
Does it use a floppy disk drive for its L2 storage ?
Looking at the news and the ftp server dates, it looks like not much has happpened with DeMudi recently.
I hope the project doesn't fade away, it certainly look very good when they first started it !.
You CAN download suse isos, see below:

Looking on amazon.co.uk theres this version of the book:
6 57 1/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-0803875-1046813
5 08 8/ref=sr_aps_books_1_2/026-0803875-1046813
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/033376
That seems to have a introduction by Stephen Fry, and a tribute by Richard Dawkins in that version.
However there is also this version (Which looks to be the same as a amazon.com version).
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/140004
I assume the one with the extra bits is a 'UK' version, while the other is a international one ?.

theres currently a debian project to do just that. have a look at:
http://debian-cygwin.sourceforge.net/
Lanugage homepage is http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/.
. ht ml
:).
Theres a intresting presentation of it, comparing to some other languages here:
http://www.io.com/~jimm/downloads/rubytalk/talk
Looks like the language uses lots of sort cuts, might give it a try sometime
you should be able to get a white box copy of it from EB or Game for around 10-20 quid.

So you could make it 'very quiet' but not slient.
I am sure there has been a mention of the shuttle S550 before on /.
Theres a athlon version of the shuttle as well.
I've noticed, that semptember 9-11, and this are mainly aimed at the US ...
:).
....
Wonder why not the UK, well looking at the World Wars (1 and 2) it would seem the UK did pretty well for a 'island'
I wonder
