i dont care what hollywood and those politicians have to say. i am upset that there is going to be a strong uphill battle for us and maybe prolonged for a while (at least the lifespan of that bastard Eisner). THEY WILL NEVER BEAT US. time and time again they attack, and we become stronger. history has shown that as the gap increases between the wealthy and the poor, the poor have always become stronger, and eventually led a revolution. its our revolution now: a digital one at that. we're in the midst of it and its exciting.

RMS is a hell of a guy. Anyone who claims that Linux would have made it to where it is today without him is dead wrong. The same goes for Linus Torvales. Truth is, nobody would use Linux if software wasn't made for it and the software wouldn't be as bountiful and high quality without RMS and FSF. I understand why RMS is pushing for this. However, I am also in agreement that GNU/Linux is not a good name due to its oddity. Linux just sounds good, and sticks. Add in Tux and you got a pretty cool campaign mascot. Here's the point: NOBODY SHOULD BE BASHING RMS!!! Because he believes so strongly in the name change does not deter one bit from what he did for you, me, and all involved in the open source world. If anything, he should be praised for walking the tightrope for so long in the face of so much criticism. He is idealogic, intelligent, and capable. Without an idealogic leader, a whole society can easily lose sight of what it set out to do. If you are willing to be understanding, it's easy to look past the differences and collaborate on the agreements. Likewise, accepting and respecting other views might give you a little insight into your own views.

This is really interesting because I'm sure this is one faction of the attack Hollywood is making on the digital world. In case you guys haven't heard, Michael Eisner of Disney is leading a huge campaign by the movie industry to make it mandatory that all hardware and devices capable of playing audio/video have a sensor to detect a waterseal and then render the piece of hardware useless when burning or ripping. I think the whole thing is ridiculous, but I do not have faith in our system to vote it down (especially when the people who lead this attack can buy a verdict). Besides computers, they are attacking ReplayTV, MP3 Players, and memory sticks. Their point is somewhat valid, they need to make money to support what they do. But, they should also realize that their practices deprive us of these things which as everyone knows is a very important piece of our lives: art and artists. It costs me $9.00 to see a movie! Add a girl, and some food you got a $30.00 night if you skip dinner. And the movie industry makes the majority of the admissions I believe. Among other things, it has come to the point that we just plain and simple can not and will not afford these things when it is so outrageous. I still plan to enjoy it all though so I'll take every free media I can find. It isn't immoral in the least. My roommate listens to MP3s and buys the CDs of the artists he likes. CDs offer more with the music. I buy DVD's because of the rich features and quality. I took to my favorite band from MP3s and now pay for their concerts, memorabilia, etc. I have a much wider variety of taste for the arts since digital media became accessible. A long time ago, art was never associated with money. I'll be damned if I'm gonna let these people deprive me of our own human nature. Open source is such a beautiful example. And it's united and competitive at the same time. It should be applied to many more markets. Open Source scares the hell out of these people but they won't admit it. MS knows they are living on borrowed time. I predict in the future they will be forced to switch to open source (shared source is a joke). We should be nurturing an environment that allowes us to do all these things and not be limited by money. A long long rant. Sorry.

  5. Why don't they trust us to make our own decisions? on New Bill Would Restrict Sale of Video Games to Minors · · Score: 1

Parental advice will only go so far. I am 20 years old and I believe I have a much better perception of how the youth thinks than the vast majority of adults, some even their own parents. I speak for myself, but if anyone agrees, please say so. All we're ever told is what we CAN'T do, not what we CAN do. From infancy, we are bombarded with "NO"'s. It reminds me of the way state laws work: make a law and force them to follow. If they don't abide, they are punished. Rather than acting high and mighty all the time, how about a different more compassionate approach? Maybe somewhere more along the lines of giving us the knowledge and guidance to make our own decisions based on whats right and wrong. If you raised us right, then we'll make the right decision correct? Otherwise you're merely putting off a problem that will only manifest into something more tragic in the future. Guess what? With proper consideration most of us will realize it's just a game, enjoy it for what it is, and leave it untied to reality. I'm sick of parental authority. I may piss people off here, but it's bullshit. Parental guidance would be a hell of a lot better. Keep teaching us to follow and we'll end up exactly like the ignorant masses who work like drones just to survive today. Give us guidance, teach us to lead, and eventually you need not worry about video games because we will no longer need your decisions. And the way I see it, it's far and few between that the right decisions are made anymore, so maybe it would be better to let us decide anyway. (OUCH! So am I going to be flamed here?)

This is ridiculous. I'm not going to say anything about whether it is illegal or illegal. It's a mute point and anyone with half a brain would be able to figure it out (What's that say for Hollywood?). But what bugs me is these people don't understand that things are changing. We are entering the information age. My generation wants the free flow of information. We don't want it withheld from us. Everytime it's withheld, it impedes progress. Progress does not bend to business practices. Rather, it is the other way around. Regardless of what they say and do and complain about, the fact is we are becoming stronger with out ability to obtain information for free. It's only a matter of time before they have to give in and accept it. The music industry and software industry did. Get over it CORPORATE AMERICA, your rule is coming to an end...
