how many of 'any old computer' would you take?
I bet if you told slashdot your address, or put out a few free classifieds, you'd end up with truckloads coming in every day. I can send you a bunch of crap I'm not using, but you'll only end up in the same place as me. In fact it's sort of a conundrum for me.

    1) I don't want throw it away b/c I know it's still useful.
    2) I don't want to use it b/c i allready have plenty of stuff that's better to keep me busy.
    3) I don't want to set up a giant beowulf/SETI@home cluster in my garage b/c
    a) I live in an apartment that's allready littered w/ old hardware.
    b) the electric bill would add up.
    c) any jacka$$ w/ two p4's would still spank me.
    4) I'm having trouble finding 'donation' places that take parts, or that take parts PII generation (PII is my personal cut off currently, so that doesn't do me anygood).

    5) I don't have the time to take pics & post ebay ads for parts which are worth $1 & probably won't sell anyway, plus I don't feel like pluggin em back in to test & i don't want to sell people broken crap.

    6) I'd rather not recycle working parts, b/c they still work, but I will if I have no choice. so what's a guy to do?

My buddy in college ran some sort of voice recognition on his 486 (he was handicapped). he had a card in there which he said cost several thousand at the time. this not to say that handheld's today can't do it. but perhaps the cpu power required is at least not THAT trivial

they very well might. or maybe they use something like the klat2 supercomputer but they're still not getting 100 gigabits. 66mhz 64 bit pci (if they've got it) theoretical max is 4 gigabits. I believe that fast RAM throughput is on the same order of magnitude. Not to mention how many nic's you'd need to get 100 gigabits.

Hi, I'm intersted in getting an IT position at a university. I'm especially interested in the educational benefits. How are the salaries in that sector? I'm currently an underpaid gov't contractor, so i'm relatively easy to impress. Also, do they consider it a + or a - if you really intend to take advantage of free/almost free schooling (like for instance getting a degree). The way I see it, it keeps me around for a while, but it also makes me a little less available, less able to focus.
