i guess the section was chosen because of the intended readership. since most computer scientist don't know about complex dynamical systems, power-laws and scale-free networks they wouldn't read that paper. in theoretical modelling of cond matter such phenomena are well known (eg spin glasses), as well as their application to other scientific fields like computer science or theoretical biology. of course it doesn't help much if such works are only noticed in the field of theoretical physics..
you better go to Brisbane instead...otherwise you'll have to take the bus for 2000km..:)
