  1. Re:And did you see the royalty for MP3 encoders?! on New MP3 License Terms Demand $0.75 Per Decoder · · Score: 1
I might be wrong on this one, but IIRC the lame mp3 encoder is royalty free, because they ripped out every patented stuff and did it themselves with the 'GPSYCHO'-thing.

Perhaps it would be possible to redo (for example) mpg321 in a similar way?

  2. Re:NOT a TV Tuner, a TV *Encoder* on nForce2 Preview · · Score: 1

I just happen to use a motherboard with the predecessor (nForce 420) chipset, in fact a MSI K7N420. And IIRC there is some kind of TV encoder on the IGP, but the MSI guys want you to buy an add-on card to get it working. So the only innovative thig about the new chipset would be the HDTV processor? (to bad I can neither afford a new mainboard with nForce2 nor a HDTV-set - but wait - why do I need it again?)

  3. Re:Going Overboard? on FBI Raids Homes and Seizes Bandwidth Pirates' PCs · · Score: 1
These two things (cable ISPs and stores) aren't exactly comparable. At least you are supposed to have an account with your ISP, so they know who you are, so they can charge the bandwidth (I strongly agree that it has to be paid). It would work eventually, because most people don't like having police or FBI et al. in their house.

Perhaps the it would be even more effective if the ISPs told their customers that they would permanently raise the fees if one uncapped his modem.

BTW: I wonder if any of the "pirates" would claim to be bandwidth-addicted just do defend himself.

Another (better?) idea: Why shouldn't the US take control of ICANN and then "donate" it to the ITU? This way it would be in the hands of an international organisation and couldn't be easily influenced by corporate and governmental interests. (Also I have to admit that the ICANN might start to suffer from bureaucracy then)

The german newspaper "Die Zeit" published an interesting article upon video games and art some weeks ago, pointing out that some games could in fact be considered as art.
The article is available online here. It's german, so you might need a translator
