An article in Popular Science just 3(?) months back discussed this very issue. The result? They understand the fact that their GPS signals can be jammed. The military planned to put higher concentrated GPS signals [strong enough to make it extremely difficult to jam] where needed...such as areas of active wartime operation.

I agree with the PowerPad external cells. It is the smallest and lightest solution if your budget can afford it. It also does not involve the liablity and health risks of lead batteries and such. Best of luck.
