Oh, right! Because your name is "bungo" and his is "A/C", your word is more believable than his?
I think the point he was trying to make, was not to exaggerate about the privacy issues. You seem to be dragging racism issues into the discussion... but hey, the fact that our ID is digital or not doesn't change a thing about the racism. So I think we may want to discuss that at another place.
Here in Belgium we have a quite good social security system. People are generally content (although, of course, some people just always complain) to trade this off for some privacy. There is actually not that much of an issue about the privacy... which is well enough protected by law.
For the record: I'm a Belgian too, also hoping to get my master's degree in CS in a few month's time; I have also posted as A/C before, just because I hadn't made a/.ID then.
After all we are only talking about the perpetuation of life itself. I almost would be bold enough to say, "that if you are against terraforming, then you are basically against life itself".
If I should name one thing threatening "the perpetuation of life itself", then it's humans.
Don't you think it might be the more intelligent thing to learn how to get on with each other on earth, and only if we can, check out if we still feel the urge for colonization of space?
Riley listened carefully to some crackling and squealing patterns from the magnetic field the Galileo spacecraft discovered surrounding Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede. "It sounded to me like a voice saying, 'beebopterismo,' [...]
This guy should come over to the playground in my neighbourhood, he'll be able to record a lot of music! Beebopterismo's, hiphopterismo's, as much as he likes, and not to forget... the swing!!
Because the whole point of staging at L1 is that it allows low-energy transfers to other points in the solar system. Launching a trip to Mars, for example, from L1 would require much less energy than from either the surface of the Earth, or low Earth orbit, or the surface of the moon.
Am I missing something? Before you can launch a trip to, say, Mars, you'd have to get your ship up there. From Earth, I'd say. I can't imagine the trip Earth-L1-Mars requiring less energy then the trip Earth-Mars...
"us" and "them", "we" and "they"... "world power"...
Maybe I am a younger person without any historical perspective, and maybe indeed I'm too easily irritated by your arrogance (or what was your point?), but I do know that a lot of people (mostly non-americans, I guess) do not think in these terms of world powers, world wars, "they think" when talking about all people (!) in a nation, etc.
So I don't think foreigners' criticisms on US' international politics are just childish outings of some frustration. Maybe they see things from an other historical perspective then you do? (I'd say, err, a somewhat less self-centered perspective, maybe?)
