  1. If it stays on the router-side only, that's great! on Cisco Working to Block Viruses at the Router · · Score: 1

This sounds like a promising idea to me, if the implementation stays on the router itself. It sounds like the router will look for packet sessions identical to those used by worms/viruses, and move those clients to a null-routed subnet. If it works, then by all means go for it. As long as moving customers from a live routed to null routed interface is simple, then I fully support any ISP implementing it.

  2. Re:Canadian dope laws -- that lax? on Canada Immune From RIAA? · · Score: 1

Plus it would be chaos for the American drug control people, since it would likely flood the US with dope.

Canada already is...the RCMP (Canada's national police force) estimates that 50% of dope grown in Canada is exported to the United States. Just look at how high school students are doing.

Also, conservative esitmates in British Columbia put the dope trade at $5 billion CDN per year. That would make it the third largest industry in B.C. behind natural resources and tourism.

It's sad how many people characterize pot as worse than alcohol or any other soft drug. Governments realized after many years the revenue potential in alcohol sales far outweighed the risks involved in banning it. But with pot legal, hundreds of thousands of people would be released from jail and the "War on Drugs" would see its funding cut.

And the United States can't back down from any war, can it?

PS: Almost all serious studies into pot say that it should be a health system problem, not a criminal justice system problem.

  3. Re:The difference is this ... on Verizon PTT (Push To Talk) vs Nextel's Direct Connect? · · Score: 2, Informative

Motorola devceloped the iDEN protocol in-house, so Nextel uses mostly Motorola phones. The iDEN service itself runs over an IP network, so Verizon (plus AT&T and Sprint, who are also working on their own PTT services) are basically duplicating Nextel's setup.

Anyone considering Verizon's PTT service right now should keep in mind the only way they'll be able to PTT is if they (and anyone they want to PTT) replace their phones. Also, Verizon seems no better than Nextel when it comes to pricing. Many people I know abandoned Nextel due to cost, and Verizon may scare people away from PTT for the same reason. Personally, $60+/month is too much for any phone!

  4. Digital Re-mastering? on Matrix Sequels To Get the IMAX Treatment · · Score: 1

Is it just me, or is IMAX's press release a little confusing?

From what I understand, Warner Brothers spent a fair chunk of change buying a fat pipe from Australia to the U.S. to move captured video back and forth. Also, thematrix.com releases hi-res trailers which they say come directly from the digital source.

So why is IMAX trumpeting their 35mm-to-IMAX technology? Isn't the movie already digital in format?
