Yes, but as an insider I know that all you're doing is abusing the BBC's small rack of 486's in telehouse New York.

What better way to try and reassure people that unsubscribing via the link in a spam email works and therefore get even more unsuspecting people to verify their addresses?

  4. It's a Noble Aim on Developing a Standards-Compliant Web App? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Aiming for standards compliance is always a good thing, IMHO. However, you will find that you will have to make compromises along the way given that not all browsers comply with the standards to the same degree.

About 2 years ago I was involved in redeveloping our proprietary Web app to comply more with standards. It was a huge uphill battle to try and convince management that this was what they wanted. Complying to standards meant we had to drop or significantly change features of the app to ensure that it would work cross-browser and remain accessible.

My main advice is that whenever you ahve to make compromises on functionality and compliance, try and veer to the side of compliance. Your customers will (hopefully) thank you for it in the long run. Especially, if like me, they don't use IE or Netscape :-)

  5. Speeding up browsing? on Science Project Quadruples Surfing Speed - Reportedly · · Score: 2, Informative

I've heard of tools in the past that claim to speed up browsing by cacheing ahead. These tools follow links on a page before you request them so that they are already in the browser's cache when you come to click on a link.

The other possibility is some heavy compression server side, but this would require a server module (e.g. mod_gzip) and this rules out any kind of built in compression in ppp, so the sppeedup would, I guess, not be as noticable as 5x.

Needless to say, I'm fairly sceptical that this is an actual speedup of browsing. If you can only fit 56Kbps down a line then you can only fit 56Kbps down a line...

You sign up online and buy an amount of credits which you can then use to dialup in many countries across the world without having to worry about finding or signing up with a local ISP.

  7. Nice company on Alternatives to MS SQL Server for Dynamic Content Website? · · Score: 1

If I were you I'd try and do as little as you can to get yourself a good reference from the company and then quit as soon as possible.

It sounds like you'll be getting little in the way of help or support on this one. If I were in that position, I'd be feeling very uncomfortable with my working conditions and would be looking for alternative employment asap. :-)

If you want to do the company a favour before you leave, I'd echo the sentiments of:

    1) Converting as much as you can into static content.
    2) If you still have dynamic content to be served, move across to technologies that have a fairly large and well-established development community.

MySQL is fairly well used and works well under Windows IMHO. I personally choose PHP as a site scripting language. I've used it under both *NIX and Windows environments and have found it to be easy to learn & use and has a large base of developers available.
