They're probably worried that as soon as they build it, they'll be forced to open it up to everybody else before they can recoup their investment in it. That's a legitimate argument. It's a very expensive investment to build a data network. What's the point in doing it if you're building it for your competitors to use?

I can certainly see that point of view. If you're the only one big enough to build something, and you build it, you're a monopoly and that just isn't fair.

Sony makes sure that you play by their rules. I'll give you an example: What's the standard format for a memory card on a Digital Camera? Compact Flash. What type of memory cards do Sony Digital Cameras use? Memory stick.

You might have had a point, except for a couple of things:

1.) The guy was obviously trolling. Don't believe me? Look at his moderations.

2.) Did you catch the last line of my post?

"When someone takes offense at a comment you make, intended or not, the proper response is to apologize, not to get defensive and insult the offended."

Hmmm possibly. I'm not completely convinced of that, but I'm not ignoring it either.

Here's what gets me though, why is MS the bad guy here? Obviously there's some demand for MS to fill here. The chances are Hollywood is telling MS "we'll start making movies ready for PC when we have the protection we need". MS knows that content will provide a new interest in PCs. They're probably bending over backwards to get Hollywood's support.

I don't think MS is interested in locking up your data (their install CD's have trivial copy protection, btw...), I think they're interested in getting content creators on board. If you want to point a finger, point it at the MPAA. They (plus the RIAA) are the ones that think this type of thing is important. (SSSCA) MS wouldn't introduce these restrictions and piss off their customers (like an office setting wants to deal with more pain from their computers) unless they thought there was a huge benefit to it.

As somebody planning to enter the VFX world soon, it's WONDERFUL that I can download this software and learn how to use it, therefore I can train myself before I get the job. The potential advantage here is that newbs to the industry aren't so newbish anymore.

Nobody should care that it's Linux. They should care that Film Gimp is available for Linux, and soon Windows (which most of us starting out are already using). Hopefully a 3D app like Maya will wander into the Open Source arena before too long. (Yes, I'm aware of Blender, it's not at Maya's quality yet.)
